‘Live’ Projects

Projects with Industry

Year two are undertaking two live projects this year.

The first project is with our KTP partner, Godfrey Syrett Ltd, investigating a number of briefs for the Higher Education market and with “active learning” at its heart.

The second project is with Scandinavian kitchen manufacturing giant, Nobia.   Supporting the project with Nobia is one of our graduates, Emma Braham. Emma has been with the company for 2 years as a designer, frequently travelling throughout Europe and working with suppliers.

Work on these projects is well underway and our students have benefited from some brilliant presentations at the companies’ respective premises, together with excellent factory tours.   We are all looking forward to seeing the fruition of these projects in the coming weeks.   Both companies have generously agreed to donate to our 3rd yrs New Designers Exhibition Fund.

Tees Made 2nd again

For the 2nd year running a team of staff and 3rd students from Product Design took on similar teams from around the University in the Festival of Learning Challenge.

Like last year each team had to complete a number of physical and mental tasks against the clock. Despite coming 2nd again it was immense fun and winning the silver meant a healthy prize of £250. The award will help bolster the money already raised by the students to exhibit their work at the New Designers 2016 Exhibition which is taking place at the Business Design Centre, London in July

Third time lucky next year.

Last week, in the sweltering heat of London, students from Product Design exhibited their final project work at the New Designers Exhibition in Islington.

Funding for the exhibition was raised by the students through organized events, ‘live’ projects and through sponsorship.

New Designers takes place every year at the Business Design Centre which was once the Royal Horticultural Hall. Over 3.500 graduates exhibited from institutes all across the UK.

New Designers allows students to showcase their work alongside fellow graduates from across the UK with the aim of getting themselves noticed and that first foot on the ladder, which will help shape their future.

It was a great week with lots of interest from both the Industry and potential employers. We also welcomed a lot of ex-students onto the stand who had come along specifically to catch up and to meet the current graduates.

Creative Tees Made

Last night saw the opening of the Product Design Degree show which is part of Creative Teesside. It was a busy night with friends, family and colleagues from Industry all celebrating the hard work that went into the projects on display.

Pack it in!!

2nd year students Callum Brookbanks  and Lewis White have won silver and bronze star awards, respectively, in the Institute of Materials Student Starpack Packaging awards.

Callum’s entry for a squeezable butter pack with patterned nozzle won silver.

Callum and Lewis will be attending the award ceremony at the National Space Centre, Leicester, in September.

Tees Made 2nd…

This week saw a team of staff and 3rd students from Product Design take on other teams from around the University in the Festival of Learning Challenge.

Each team had to perform a number of physical and mental tasks against the clock which included making and riding a ‘Flintstone ‘ style car, bridge building and diving headfirst into a ball pool. The team hoped to win the £1000 1st prize to bolster the New Designers Exhibiton Fund.

The whole event was great fun despite being pipped at the post into 2nd place. Need to work harder next year.

‘Teething’ My Way into Industry

In the summer I conducted a 3 month internship as a junior designer with Jackel International under the Tommee Tippee brand. In the position I was given the opportunity to work with industry professionals in an in-house design department. In the role I was given the opportunity to develop design ideas for the company in a number of ways, working by myself in producing baby products and generating detailed research to support and show marketing teams the reasoning for the developed designs. I also worked with and alongside my colleagues to produce products for toddlers creating detailed sketch work, analysis and research to which we presented to groups from marketing, sales, quality control and manufacturing.

My time working in the position has allowed me to gain a greater understanding and appreciation for the work that is conducted in a real life industry standard design company. The enthusiastic, fun and friendly team I worked alongside have all contributed to my understanding and further knowledge of industrial design. I will take away this knowledge and apply it to the work I conduct in the future hoping to develop my skills to help me secure that dream job.

Designers for the future

18 Year 11 and 12 students from Kings Academy joined us last Wednesday as part of a mentoring programme with our 3rd year students. This was the 1st of three visits over the course of the year. The product design students are acting as clients giving support, advice and direction on a range of projects undertaken by the students from Kings. Project briefs include kettles, interior car parts and lighting.

As part of the visit they were also given a flavour of what it is like to be a student at Teesside University during a tour of the University campus by our 2nd year student Ambassadors.
