Blackboard Feature Alert: AI Conversations
Teesside University’s Blackboard Ultra environment includes a feature designed to make learning more interactive, AI Conversations.
Using Blackboard’s AI Design Assistant, staff can create structured conversations where students explore a topic or scenario by interacting with an AI persona. Rather than simply reading content, students engage in a guided dialogue that encourages them to question ideas, reflect on their understanding, and explore concepts more deeply.
There are two main ways AI Conversations can be used in your module.
In this mode, students explore an open-ended topic through a series of guided questions. The AI does not simply provide answers; instead, it prompts students to think critically, challenge assumptions, and refine their reasoning. It transforms passive learning into active exploration and encourages deeper engagement with complex ideas.
Because the conversation is private and self-paced, students can work through their thinking without the pressure of speaking up in a live classroom setting.
For example, the Socratic section could include something like:
- exploring ethical dilemmas in healthcare where the AI challenges a student’s reasoning about patient care decisions
- discussing historical events, where the AI prompts students to question causes, consequences, and differing perspectives
- examining theoretical concepts in business or economics, encouraging students to justify assumptions and consider alternative strategies
Role-play scenarios
Role-play allows students to interact with an AI persona within a simulated scenario, creating opportunities for experiential learning, where students practise applying knowledge and professional skills in a safe environment.
For example, you could create scenarios where students:
- interview a convicted criminal persona to practise investigative questioning and managing challenging responses
- act as a doctor speaking with a patient to develop communication and diagnostic reasoning
- take part in a business negotiation with a difficult client
- conduct a journalistic interview with a historical or political figure
These types of activities allow students to experiment with decision-making, questioning techniques, and communication strategies before encountering similar situations in real-world contexts. AI role-play provides a space where students can practise skills, make mistakes, and refine their approach without the risks associated with real scenarios.
Supporting reflection and feedback
At the end of the conversation, students complete a short reflection explaining how the interaction advanced their understanding of the topic. Staff can review the conversation transcript and reflection through the Gradebook, allowing them to provide feedback or assign marks where appropriate.
Learn how to use AI Conversations
If you would like to try this feature in your module, we have created a Knowledge Base Guide that explains how to design and set up an AI Conversation in Blackboard.
