Are your students having difficulty with the maths elements of your modules? MERIT are here to help.

MERIT (Mathematics Enhancement, Retention & Improvement Team) is the Numeracy branch of the Student Success Team with a slightly wider participation scope to adapt for student need. We still offer all the bespoke 1:1 sessions for disengaged students but can also offer group support where a number of students are having difficulty with the same mathematical element. Similarly, if you are working with an apprentice student who has a mathematical element within their course and either their skills assessment (BKSB/other) or self-declaration shows a skills gap, we can offer support.

In addition, we have partnered with several academics offering workshop support alongside their lectures allowing students to hone the underlying mathematical skills needed, whilst the module academic teaches and supports the subject specific content and nuances of the taught course.

Accessing this support is simple; if you are working with a student who is disengaging with their studies for academic or engagement reasons, please refer to the student success team as normal through StREAM (engage.tees.ac.uk), if these reasons are mathematical, please add MERIT somewhere in the referral comment box. If you are having difficulty referring through StREAM then please contact studentsuccess@tees.ac.uk or MERIT@tees.ac.uk .

If, however you have a number of students finding the mathematical aspects of your course difficult, and you wish to discuss a workshop support offer please contact Barry Saccone (Senior Student Success Tutor/MERIT lead) on b.saccone@tees.ac.uk or the dedicated MERIT email address on MERIT@tees.ac.uk .

Where workshops are offered, links for students to confirm they wish to attend will be sent to academic staff to be placed on BBU. When students attend a workshop, additional 1:1 sessions will be offered if specific students need them, and likewise if a student is already receiving 1:1 support they will be informed of linked workshops to further practise their skills.
