Introduction
Typically, video content in your Blackboard Module will be created or uploaded via the ReView Video Library. The ReView Video Library is powered by Panopto and as such benefits from the affordances Panopto provides. Recently, Panopto have unveiled their new AI Assist functionality, and this post will take a look at these features.
This short video will take you through the process if you prefer to watch:
What’s New?
For any video uploaded or created recently, you now have access to automatically generated Captions, a Summary and a Table of Contents.
How do I access them?
Navigate to where your video is located. If this is Blackboard, open that module and from the Details and Actions panel, click once on Module Tools and then on ReView Video Library.
Hover your mouse over the video in question, and click the Edit icon that appears (as highlighted below).
AI Summary
In the Details menu located over on the far left of the screen, you will see the AI Summary.
From here, you can now see three Key Points and a detailed Summary. All of this content is editable, and it is strongly recommended you review the text to ensure accuracy. Should you make any changes to the text, remember to click the Apply button (top right of the screen) to save these changes.
Contents
In the Details menu, below the Summary, you can see the Contents.
By default, these are turned off, as denoted by the toggle icon next to where it says “Show AI Chapters”. Click this toggle (it will move to the right, and change colour) to allow access to the chapters. Should you wish, you can now review and edit them as appropriate. As above, if you make any changes, be sure to click the Apply button.
How do students access both the AI Summary and Contents?
Assuming you have added the video using the default options (either as a link or embedded within a Document), there are two access points. First, students can click the Expand/Collapse icon (highlighted in the diagram below as “1”), or click the “Watch in Panopto” icon (highlighted in the diagram below as “2”).
When students “expand” the view (option 1), the AI Summary and other items will slide up, obscuring the video while it does so. By clicking the icon again, the AI Summary will slide down, out of view.
If the students select to “open in Panopto (option 2), the video will open in a new window. To the left of the video, there will be a Details menu, showing all the various elements to access – such as the AI Summary and so on.
What if I don’t want them?
You may wish to not use either the AI Summary or Contents (AI Generated Chapters). As mentioned earlier, the Contents are turned off by default. However, you might want to keep the Summary hidden hidden from student view as well. When you create a link or embed a video via the ReView Video, a panel of “Video Embed Options” is available. Click this before you insert the video to open up the embed panel, as shown below.
Under the option for “Interactivity”, change this to “None”. Next, uncheck the option to “Enable Watch in Panopto”. With these two changes in place, you can now click the “Insert” button, which will be located in the bottom right of the screen. This will effectively keep the Summary hidden from student access.
