Very occasionally, when marking or providing feedback on a Turnitin assignment, you may have seen the message that the assignment has “expired” or is “read only”, necessitating an email to elearning@tees.ac.uk to resolve the issue.

Previously, Turnitin assignments would become read only six months after the latest Feedback Release Date set for a Turnitin assignment in that module.

This could be problematic as we have many cases where students resubmit an assignment or come back from suspended studies and submit more than six months after everyone else.

Good news however! Following concerns from us and many other institutions, Turnitin have now extended the “read only” date to twelve months after the last Release Feedback Date, meaning that the issue should be much less common.

Workaround

However, if this does happen to you, there is a simple workaround.

  1. Go into the module in question in Blackboard.
  2. Create a Turnitin assignment – any config settings will do.
  3. Click into the assignment as a module leader so that you can see the (empty) assignment inbox.
  4. Exit the assignment and then delete it.

This will extend the expiry date for the entire module (and every other Turnitin assignment within it) by another twelve months. You can keep doing this for a total of five years, after which it will irrevocably become read only.
