Nicola Poppitt

Nicola is a Principal Lecturer (Learning and Teaching Excellence) in the Academic Collaborative Innovation team within Student Learning & Academic Registry (SLAR). She is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and in 2009 was awarded the status of University Teaching Fellow.

Following the completion of her BA (Hons) Business Studies and MA Leisure Management Nicola became a Research Assistant for Leeds Metropolitan University. Her main research interests during this time were around racism in rugby league, leisure pools, leisure and the elderly and women in sport. In 1996 she secured a Senior Lecturer position as Head of Programmes at Fife College of Further and Higher Education before moving to Teesside University in 1998 to take up the position of Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for Leisure Management. At Teesside University Nicola has designed, delivered and led degree programmes around the area of leisure management in addition to contributing to other programmes at both School and University level.

In 2006 she became a Principal Lecturer and up until 2015 held the position of School Learning and Teaching Coordinator taking a lead role in the development of learning and teaching across the School and the University. In 2015 she took the post within Academic Registry (now SLAR) and is currently leading the University’s accredited Professional Development Framework in addition to other learning and teaching related projects and activities.

Nicola has previously been involved in a number of discipline based research projects/activities but her current research interests are now more focused around pedagogic research and she has presented at conferences and published around the areas of feedback and assessment and work based learning. Her current pedagogic research underpins her professional practice in enhancing the student learning and teaching experience.
