University throws a lot of very different people together. You’ll most likely meet more people in your time at uni than you will at any other time in your life – some you will like, some you won’t! Student Jessica shares her top tips for living with new housemates.

1. Get to know each other

You’re going to be living together which means you will spend significant time together. Find out their interests, hobbies and subject area, do you have anything in common with them? But that also leads onto tip 2.

2. You don’t need to spend every second together

You can branch out and make other friends. Many students will have friends that they live with and friends from university courses or clubs.

3. Share the workload of cleaning

If you spill something clean it up! You will come to learn that there is nothing more annoying than finding a mess left by someone else.

4. Communicate

You’re all adults if you don’t like something say it in a respectful manner. Your housemates cannot read your mind, and if they communicate something to you, listen to what they have to say.

5. Help each other out

If someone needs help with something try to help, sometimes you need that helping hand. Housemates are sometimes the best option.

6. Have Fun!

One of the most important things is to have fun. Organise games nights, take it in turns to cook meals, go out together. If you have fun and socialise with each other; generally everything else falls into place.
