Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge

I’m Niamh and I work and study in Middlesbrough – here are some top reasons why it’s a great place for both.

Things to do

Middlesbrough’s town centre has undergone a remarkable transformation. The campus is in the heart of the town, just a short walk away from places to shop, eat and have fun.

Level X, located in Captain Cook Square, offers electric karting, bowling, VR gaming, karaoke pods and vintage arcade machines. Across the square there is Bazaar, a high-end restaurant featuring global cuisine and an open kitchen.

The town’s independent quarter around Baker and Bedford Street, Linthorpe Road and Albert Road is thriving with unique bars, cafés and restaurants. From quaint cocktail bars to lively pubs, there’s something for everyone. And if you’re looking for a lively day out, visit on an Orange Pip Market day to enjoy pop-up bars, eateries, live music and performances.

Exchange Square has become a hotspot, featuring the popular STACK venue, which offers street food, drinks and live entertainment. Over the road, you can find Bloom – a restaurant and show hall combining food with theatrical performances. And just next to it, there is Honky Tonks – a Wild West-themed sports bar.

Beauty spots and nature

Middlesbrough is a gateway to stunning natural landscapes. Roseberry Topping offers spectacular views and hikes. The North York Moors and the coastlines of Saltburn and Redcar provide perfect day trips for beach outings and seaside fun. Visit Tees Barrage for water sports like paddleboarding and white-water rafting.

Local investment

The University’s £40million Digital Life building has just been unveiled, enhancing students’ learning experience in computing, engineering and digital technologies, as well as offering a cool new event space.

The Boho Zone, Middlesbrough’s digital and creative hub, has seen significant growth. Double Eleven, a leading video game developer, has moved into the new £30 million Boho X building, creating more jobs and reinforcing the town’s reputation in the digital sector.

The Gresham area is also undergoing a £200 million regeneration project, including the development of over 230 build-to-rent properties, a 400-bed student accommodation block and a new 200-bedroom Fairfield by Marriott hotel. Construction is set to begin in summer 2025, aiming to attract and retain talent in the town.

Cost of living

Middlesbrough continues to be one of the most affordable places to live and study in the UK. With ongoing investment, you can enjoy modern amenities and a vibrant lifestyle without the high costs associated with larger cities.
