Students who converted
After 20 years in e-commerce and digital marketing Tom Coley had reached a point where the industry had changed so much and he wanted to stay at the forefront, combining my experience with fresh ideas and new approaches. Postgraduate study saw him update and refine skills; but it was also a deeply personal journey. Tom said, ‘I felt I’d hit a plateau. I wanted to be better, to do business better and to challenge myself in a way I hadn’t done in years. My learning had been through experience – trial and error, moments of success and plenty of mistakes. I wanted to see how that knowledge measured up against those coming into the industry fresh from education,to make sure I wasn’t being left behind.’
Tom’s first degree was in business with marketing at Teesside which meant he benefitted from a 20% loyalty discount when he enrolled on the MSc Digital Marketing.
He said, ‘Balancing a full-time MSc, a new role and being a single parent was one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done. I couldn’t have done it without the people around me. From friends and family to the incredible staff at the Business School, I had the support I needed to keep going. The teaching staff genuinely cared about my success.’

International student Anil Jose echoes Tom’s experience. He benefitted from financial support with an international scholarship, and said, ‘The MSc Digital Marketing course is built with industry-specific demands in mind, assisting you in acquiring vital skills to land your ideal career. The student support services helped me getting interviews with top tech companies such as Amazon, Google, Uber, and LinkedIn. I have accepted a job offer from Amazon as vendor manager, Amazon Business Operations, Europe, Middle East and Africa.

For Lucie Simon the flexibility to study one module a term while working full time helped her decide that the part-time MSc Digital Marketing pathway was for her. She said, ‘I studied my undergraduate degree in fashion journalism, and naturally started writing online and creating social media content. This led me into marketing roles, though I didn’t have any marketing background in my studies. I chose this course because I wanted to develop a more analytical side to my skills. I’ve also developed my confidence, entrepreneurship and innovation.
‘I would recommend anyone considering PG study to go out of your comfort zone and take new opportunities to develop your career and personal goals.’

For Amy Williams as a history undergraduate (UG) at Teesside, her path to the MSc Digital Marketing course came about when she realised that a teaching career wasn’t for her. She said, ‘As part of my degree, my work placement was in the history department at a local secondary school, l quickly realised that the school environment wasn’t for me. It was disappointing but I was grateful for this work experience before committing to a PGCE; it gave me the time to explore other career options while finishing my first degree.
‘As a UG student I reached a level of academic and personal growth far beyond what I had envisioned when deciding to change career in 2020. Teesside gave me the confidence to take risks and push myself out of my comfort zone. My experience as a UG student made Teesside the perfect place to continue my education as a PG student.
‘Teesside International Business School has global industry links and networking opportunities with the option to participate in live business projects and field trips. I also benefitted from industry trips, including the World Travel Market in London, which was fantastic to see how global travel companies approach marketing their brand and offerings. I also visited Edinburgh airport to complete a marketing task to discuss our results and ideas with the head of marketing. The travel sector is a key interest of mine as I run a small independent travel business and these trips allowed me to educate myself, network, and gain hands on task experience.
‘My postgraduate journey has been about more than just academic learning. It’s been about transformation, taking opportunities and pushing myself to grow. Looking back, I can confidently say that choosing to study at Teesside University was one of the best decisions I have ever made.’
