Optometry is constantly evolving – and so is our clinic. Our Optometry Clinic expansion (opening this year) marks an exciting step forward for students and the public, bridging the gap between real-world practicality and classroom theory. The new clinic will help deliver high-quality eye care to the community, while transforming the way you learn, offering a more patient-centred approach to develop fundamental skills for the future. Modern and advanced technology familiarise you with a contemporary optometric practice, mirroring the experience and atmosphere of a professional environment, and offering a new understanding of what optometry has to offer.

A more hands-on approach to learning

Transforming how you learn, the new clinic will support you academically with a more patient-focused approach. While performing comprehensive eye examinations and diagnostics, you gain direct access to understand common and complex visual conditions, sharpening your clinical judgement and skills by receiving immediate feedback. You refine your clinical techniques and gain first-hand experience to some of the challenges that the real world has to offer – establishing a solid foundation to become a proficient healthcare professional. The clinic also offers advanced diagnostic technology, such as OCT imaging, retinal cameras and auto-refractors, imitating the environment of a modern optometry practice, so you can provide the most accurate level of eye care and ensure you are job-ready.

Integrating the community with optometry

By prioritising patients first, our teaching paves the way for direct and personalised care, ensuring eye care remains accessible for everyone. You learn to cater to patients’ needs under the supervision of qualified clinicians, delivering clear explanations and a comfortable, empathetic and welcoming atmosphere. This ensures patient care, safety and satisfaction is met to a high degree. Access to advanced modern equipment supports you to accurately diagnose patients and helps detect early signs of ocular conditions, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration, improving patient quality of life.

Providing patients with a local eye care service builds a community who promote healthy eyes, encouraging them to actively engage in their health. By attending the clinic, patients directly contribute to your learning, helping you acquire the essential skills needed for your future career, and playing an essential role in training the next generation of optometrists.

The new clinic embodies positive change in optometry, cultivating a strong connection between education and community. By combining learning with patient care, the clinic helps strengthen both optometric education and community eye health, demonstrating that learning and community can go hand-in-hand.
