It’s the time of year when we find ourselves swapping the light jacket for the big coat and digging out the hats and scarves.
But there’s a lot more to dressing for the season than meets the eye.
Fashion student Hanan is back – exploring the latest trends, showing us her winter wardrobe staples and sharing tips for adapting your style to suit the colder months.

Follow the looks she’s curated based on 6 emerging trends that perfectly capture the essence of winter…
1) Brown leather skirt
The winter forecast has spoken. And long leather skirts are a good option for looking great while fighting the cold.
To start, we’re styling brown leather skirts of all shades and styles – from chocolate and chestnut to pencil, fringe and wrap. They can all be paired with a stunning smart blazer and a sweater underneath to stay snug.
Or, if you’re feeling casual, you can create an effortless vibe by wearing a t-shirt with a turtleneck underneath and trainers. You could also complete your look with a pair of boots to maintain a sense of sophistication.
Above, we have a stunning brown leather maxi skirt, black turtleneck jumper and fusion pink trench coat. The look is accessorised with a chunky pair of black boots, fur bucket hat and leather gloves.
2) Tracksuit
Did someone say sporty but make it cute? Why don’t you? When we talk about tracksuit looks, we’re not just referring to the Olympic style of wearing track pants and a headband; we’re talking about more classy winter ‘fits.
For instance, an oversized hoodie with a pleated dress underneath can be stylish and pretty. Layering track pants with dresses is also a fresh twist to traditional sportswear, combining the athletic and feminine aesthetics.
I opted for some classic Adidas joggers, a nice pair of black trainers, an oversized puffer coat and a turtleneck underneath to stay warm. To keep it cute and fierce, I accessorised with a leopard print bow.
3) Warm colours
This year’s in colour scheme has moved away from the dull, monochromatic palettes and towards a more elegant one that makes everyone feel more iconic.
Trending colours are plum, olive, brown, cream, navy, mole, warm grey and red. That’s good news given how well they will pair with literally everything you own in your wardrobe! The deeper shades and these earthy tones make the ideal combination and can easily go from day to night.
The versatility makes mixing and matching within this colour palette a dream. To show you what I mean, we paired a plum jumper with cream trousers and a grey wool cotton jacket. The grey hat and white trainers complete the look. But you can choose a cashmere jumper or even a silk dress for the girlies. I enjoy tying my burgundy leather jacket in with denim or joggers.
4) Funnel neck
As you know, turtlenecks are a go-to at this time of the year. However, the funnel neck offers something a bit different. This unique neckline fits the body perfectly and can be used in a variety of combinations, making it a popular choice this winter.
For an understated style, try wearing a funnel neck jumper with fitted trousers and ankle boots. Wear with a fashionable blazer or jacket to get an extra layer of warmth. For a more laid-back look, you could pair a funnel neck jumper with comfortable jeans and trainers.
Get the look with a pink funnel neck jumper, brown cargo jean trousers and a brown puffer coat finished with a pink handbag, sunglasses, claw clip and black boots.
P.S. This look was giving Bratz girl as I was curating it. It made me feel so nostalgic!
5) Plaid and checks
These classic prints are making a spectacular comeback due to bold colours, contemporary tailoring and surprising twists.
Because of the charming nature of plaid and checked patterns, designers are using them to create pieces that are both recognisable and new.
For a preppy vibe, pair a plaid skirt with a fitted turtleneck and knee-high boots. Wear a plaid flannel blazer with jeans and combat boots to capture the grunge look. For a streetwear-inspired yet stylish outfit, opt for a checked bomber jacket with joggers and trainers.
I was looking for something warm and casual, so went for a black and white plaid shacket and blue jeans topped off with a white cotton wool scarf, black sunglasses and a pair of high-shine black boots.
6) Fur
Fur fashion is making a strong comeback. But we can all feel at ease this time around, as companies are now using cutting-edge biofabrication techniques to make imitation fur from natural fibres like hemp, bamboo and even lab-grown materials. Phew!
Giving a high-fashion look every day this winter is as easy as adding a fur coat or jacket. They come in different styles, colours and patterns. Neon hues are great for making a bold statement while the animal-inspired patterns are a bit more traditional.
Why not pair with a chic satin dress and heels for a sumptuous look? Or wear with a blouse and fitted trousers for a polished ensemble. Make it more cosy with jeans, trainers and a chunky knit jumper.
I styled my leopard print fur jacket with leather black trousers and a turtleneck for the casual but cool look. The black boots, fur earmuffs and a brown hijab finish it off.
You don’t have to sacrifice style for warmth and comfort in your winter wardrobe. Statement coats, bold accessories, chic colours (and a trusty turtleneck) are all you need to put the fun back into dressing for the season.
