Teesside University is a safe and inclusive environment, but we can all do more to help look after ourselves and each other.
Whether you’re a student going to campus or a member of staff on your way to work, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and know what’s in place.
Here are our top tips to help you feel even safer at university.
Download the SafeZone app
Firstly, you can download SafeZone – a free app that connects you to our University security team. It’s there to use if you ever need first-aid or urgent help when you’re on campus.
The app allows you to call for help should you need it and alerts our security staff to your situation and current location so they can help you quickly and effectively.
You can download the SafeZone app on to your smartphone or tablet and sign up to it using your Teesside University email.
Personal safety
If you’re walking, always try to take the shortest and most direct route, and keep your belongings close to you and any valuable items out of sight.
We all like listening to our favourite songs, but avoid wearing headphones or ear buds when in isolated locations – this will keep you more aware of your surroundings.
Also, if you do see anything suspicious, please report it to our security team. Don’t just assume someone else has reported it – remember, two reports are better than none.
Nights out
Socialising with friends and going on nights out can be a massive part of your university experience. While having fun, it’s important to take steps to stay safe, so keep this advice in mind…
1. Stick with friends
It can be easier than you realise to become separated from your friends on a night out.
Think about creating a group chat with your friends to keep in touch throughout the night. GPS phone locator apps like Life360 and Find My Friends can be really helpful when shared with trusted individuals too.
If you’re breaking off from a group to step outside or go to the toilet, always take a friend so you’re with someone you know and trust.
2. Don’t leave your drink unattended
Although it’s rare, there’s unfortunately a risk of drink spiking on a night out, so never leave your drink unattended. If you need to leave for a moment, ask a trusted friend to watch your drink for you, and make sure to order your own drinks from the bar.
3. Stay alert when getting home
At the end of the night, head home with friends and make sure everyone knows how and when each of you are getting home.
Consider pre-booking a taxi with a reputable company or driver so plans are in place ahead of time. Get the details of the vehicle and agree a price in advance so you can have money set aside for your journey home.
We wouldn’t recommend walking home after a night out, but if you do then make sure you to stay in well-lit, busy areas. Never walk alone, stay alert, and again, avoid listening to music through headphones.
Vehicle and bike security
Do you cycle to campus? If so, you can register to use our secure bike lockers. The bike shelters are controlled through card entry, so always ensure the door is closed behind you to prevent unauthorised entry. To help keep your bike secure, we recommend using a D lock and cable lock together.
If you drive to campus, plan your route so you can confidently find us, park your car in a well-lit area and don’t leave any valuables left on show in your vehicle.
Speak to our Safety and Security team or Cleveland Police Community Support Officers
If you ever feel concerned, or see something you’re unsure about, you can always speak to one of our security officers. They are based in the University Library and are on hand 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Or you can contact them on 01642 342086.
Alternatively, you can seek support from our Cleveland Community Support Officers, who patrol the campus daily.
