My exchange programme experience, by Faris Ismail Hussein.
Study abroad opportunities can be the best way to expose yourself to new cultures and experiences, whilst giving you unparalleled personal growth and independence. We sat down with Faris Ismail Hussein, an exchange student who studied a semester at Teesside University London on our BSc (Hons) Business Management. Faris is a student at Hochschule Bielefeld – University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Germany, and shared his experience of studying in one of the world’s most global cities.
What attracted me to the exchange programme at Teesside University London
I had wanted to do a semester abroad for quite some time to grow both personally and academically. Improving my language skills was also a key goal for me, and I wanted to study in an English-speaking country. London immediately appealed to me because I enjoy living in large cities and they offer countless opportunities for personal development alongside academic life, build new connections, meet people from all over the world, and gain completely new perspectives. Teesside University London stood out as very modern, future-oriented, and well-organised. The existing partnership with my home university made the decision even easier.
How I enjoyed the experience
It’s been extremely positive. I am impressed by the teaching methods and by how much you can learn in such a short time. I faced a few small language challenges at the beginning, but I have been able to adapt very well. The lecturers are supportive, give students a great deal of independence, and create a motivating learning environment. The campus is modern, lively, and very accessible. I especially appreciate that several university sites are located together, which creates a dynamic atmosphere to easily meet new students.
Living and studying in London has been both exciting and enriching. Settling in was surprisingly straightforward. Freshers’ Week played a huge role in helping me find my way around quickly. By the time lectures and seminars started, I already knew where everything was and felt comfortable and welcomed from day one. What I love most about London is its multicultural environment. You meet people from so many different backgrounds every day, and that is truly inspiring. Each area of the city feels unique, and there is always something new to discover – this is what makes London so special for me.
The highlight of my experience
How quickly you can make connections here. From Freshers’ Week and university activities, to everyday interactions around the city, you constantly meet new people. Combined with living in a city that is always moving and full of opportunities, this has made my experience unforgettable.
How the exchange programme has benefited my personal development
It has had a very positive impact on my personal development. I have become more independent, more confident, and better at adapting to new situations. I have also improved my language skills and discovered new professional perspectives; as well gaining a broader view of my studies and my future. It has shown me how valuable international experiences truly are.
Advice for students considering an exchange programme
Be brave and make the most of this opportunity. A semester abroad offers possibilities you simply would not have at home. You benefit from great support from your home university, your lecturers, and the partner institution. Stay open-minded, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to approach new people. You thrive on new encounters, friendships, and experiences. London offers endless opportunities – culturally, academically, and personally. Embrace the adventure.
