We know that January can feel like a bit of a struggle. The festive season is over, the days are shorter, and the excitement of starting a new year fades into routine.

Whether you’re back at University or settling into a new term at college, the January blues can sometimes make it hard to stay motivated and energised. But don’t worry, you’re not alone! Here are some top tips to help you beat the January blues and start the year with a positive, fresh mindset.

Set small, achievable goals

One of the easiest ways to overcome those post-holiday slumps is by setting small, manageable goals. Instead of looking at the entire semester or a huge to-do list, break your tasks down into bite-sized chunks. Whether it’s completing one assignment, attending all your lectures, or even just making it to the gym a few times a week, setting yourself clear and achievable goals helps you build momentum and feel a sense of accomplishment.

Get active

Exercise is one of the best ways to boost your mood, fight off stress, and get rid of that sluggish feeling. The Here East campus is perfect for getting out and about – we have well-connected local cycle paths for cyclists, and walks along the canals for the perfect way to get your steps in!

Embrace the social scene

It’s easy to feel isolated after the buzz of the holiday season, but staying connected with others is key to lifting your spirits. Make time for friends and attend events on campus. Make sure you’re following our social media channels for all our campus and event updates.

Focus on yourself

January can sometimes bring feelings of anxiety or stress, especially when thinking about upcoming exams or coursework deadlines. It’s important to take care of your mental health as much as your physical health. Take some time each day to relax and unwind. Try meditation, journaling, reading, or simply taking a break from screens. Find an activity that helps you recharge. We offer 24/7 mental wellbeing and welfare support, and you can talk to a qualified counsellor or advisor no matter where you are located. Find out more.

Personalise your space

The winter months can make everything feel a little dreary, so try to brighten up your living space. Add a few personal touches to your room, such as plants, fairy lights, or photos of friends and family. Natural light also plays a huge role in boosting your mood, so open your curtains when you can or sit near a window during study sessions.

Get organised

A messy desk or disorganised schedule can leave you feeling overwhelmed and stressed. Take some time to get your academic life in order by organising your notes and cleaning up your study space. Use a planner or digital calendar to track important dates like deadlines, exams, and study sessions. Knowing exactly what you need to do and when can reduce anxiety and make everything feel more manageable.

Get outside

Sometimes a change of scenery and a day in the fresh air is all you need to shake off the blues. Explore the local area around London! Whether it’s walking through some of London’s parks or green spaces, or exploring the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, a day out can help reset your mind.

Eat well and stay hydrated

Your diet plays a huge role in your energy and mood. Fuel your body with nutritious food that keeps your brain and body performing at their best. Try to eat a balanced diet filled with fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water.

Learn something new

A fresh start to the year is the perfect time to pick up a new hobby or learn something you’ve always wanted to do. Whether it’s learning a new language, mastering a new skill, or trying a different type of workout, challenging yourself with something new can help you stay engaged and excited about the year ahead.

We have a range of short Winter University courses starting this January. Courses cost just £50, and the fee is waived if you go on to enrol on a course with us or if you’re a current Teesside University London student.
