The good news? Everyone else is in the same boat and probably just as eager to make friends as you are.

Here are some tips to meet new people and make new friends at uni.

1. Say yes to social events
Welcome week, societies, clubs or going for a coffee with classmates – attend as many events as you can to help you meet people. Even if you don’t click with someone straight away, every event helps to put yourself out there.

2. Talk to people in your classes
Get to know your classmates and sit next to someone new in your lectures and seminars. Find out their interests, hobbies and where they are from. Sit next to a new person in every class to get to know your whole class, and hopefully you’ll find someone you connect with.

3. Don’t be afraid to make the first move
It can be awkward to be put yourself out there but asking someone if they want to get lunch after class or attend an event with you can be the start of a great friendship.

4. Stay off your phone
It’s tempting to hide in your phone when you’re feeling uncomfortable, but staying present and open to others makes you more approachable and gives others the opportunity to talk to you.

5. Be yourself and be patient
Be your authentic self. People will connect with realness. Be yourself, that’s more than enough. Real friendships take time to grow and not everyone will be your bestie straight away, but that’s ok. Take your time, stay open and keep showing up.

University is one of the best places in life to meet new people. Take a deep breath. You’ve got this. Your future friends are probably just a few conversations away.

Starting university is exciting, but let’s be real, it can also be overwhelming.
