DECLAN McKENNA is just 17, but has released several banging singles, toured the world and is about to head back out on tour with band-of-the-moment Blossoms. He will support for eleven of the Manchester band’s shows – starting at Birmingham Institute tonight (Friday 23rd September) and concluding at Nottingham’s Rock City on Friday 7th October.
Tside reporter Callum Thornhill spoke to the talented teenager ahead of the tour, asking him about FIFA, memes and more.
YOU ARE ABOUT TO HEAD OUT ON TOUR WITH BLOSSOMS – HOW ARE YOU FEELING AHEAD OF THAT?
“I am very excited. I have toured with them before, they are great lads as well as a quality band. The venues we are playing are quality – gonna be a lot of fun!”
“Pretty, yeah! It is one of the few things I have genuinely wanted to happen for as long as I can remember. For it to happen at 17 is madness, can’t wait for it to come out!”
ARE YOU A FAN OF THE FIFA SERIES?
“I guess I am. I haven’t really played video games much in the last couple of years, the last one I owned was FIFA 11, which was pretty decent.”
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE FIFA TRACKS?
“I Can Change by LCD Soundsystem and Machu Pichu by The Strokes to name a couple. I think my earliest memories come from FIFA 03, which is probably still my favourite of them all just because of nostalgia. Jerk It Out is still the most 2002 song to come out of 2002 and is still fantastic.”
YOU HAVE A HEADLINE SHOW AT NAMBUCCA, LONDON ON 6TH OCTOBER – IS THIS LIKE A FAREWELL CELEBRATION WITH A PARTY VIBE?
“Not really. I doubt Blossoms will be about for it, but I think ever show is a part. I try to treat ’em all the same. It is going to be special because it is London – where I started playing my first bunch of shows and my mates Scors are going to open for. I am mad excited for that.
“If there is a big farewell it is probably going to be Neighbourhood Festival in Manchester, Blossoms’ home city! We are both there after the last day of tour – parties all round!”
HOW HAVE THE RECENT FOREIGN GIGS BEEN FOR YOU?
“They’ve been cool! The responses around Europe and America have been fantastic. To have people in places I’ve never been to over a thousand miles from where I live turning up to see my shows is amazing.
“I love travelling and seeing new places and the whole experience so far has been loads of fun – just kind of tiring.”
I SAW YOU BACKSTAGE AT DEER SHED FESTIVAL THIS SUMMER PLAYING SWINGBALL – DO YOU HAVE ANY PRE-GIG RITUALS?
“We tend to do this thing where we all clap at the same time and try to have no overlap. It is pretty difficult. That, along with listening to Gabi’s (drummer) playlist of the same 4 funk/RnB tracks.”
YOUR TWITTER PAGE IS FULL OF MEMES (NOT A BAD THING!!) – WHAT IS THE MOST OUTSTANDING MEME OF 2016?
“The best of the year has to be Harambe! People may say it is overdone, but I completely disagree. The reason for the death of a meme is because corporations try to exploit them in promotions and adverts, but the death of a gorilla is far too morbid to be exploited in this way so the joke just does not get ruined.
“Harambe lives on in our wildest hopes and memes.”
FINALLY, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM DECLAN McKENNA FOR THE REST OF 2016?
“Lots of shows, maybe some songs and top bants all round!”
