Securing Research Funding (8 Week Programme)

This Securing Research Funding Programme is aimed at those who are new to grant writing or who want to enhance their grant writing practice. It will provide participants with the essential skills to apply for research funding and put in a high quality application. By the end of the course, attendees will be able to:

    • identify suitable sources of funding for research
    • situate their research within the larger funding landscape
    • write a high quality funding proposal
    • understand project management essentials and post-award processes

Fast-track programmes are intensive programmes that require time and dedication and are targeted at researchers within our nine research centres. Programmes consist of a mixture of online workshops, webinars, independent learning, and group work.

SUITABLE FOR: Early Career / Researchers New to Funding / Final Year PGRs

DURATION: 8 Weeks, 1-2 hours per week (plus 1-2 hours homework)

Part One: 04th November 2020, 10:30 – 12:00, 11th November 2020, 10:30 – 11:30, 18th November 2020, 10:30 – 12:30, 25th November 2020, 10:30 – 12:30

Part Two: 13th January 2021, 10:30 – 11:30, 20th January 2021, 10:30 – 11:30, 28th January 2021, 10:30 – 12:30, 10th February 2021, 10:30 – 12:30

COURSE STRUCTURE

Week 1: Online workshop (1.5 hours) – The Funding landscape

Week 2: Online workshop (1 hour) – Peer Review and Funding Systems

Week 3: Online workshop (2 hours) – Getting Started with Grant Writing

Week 4: Online workshop (1.5 hours) – The Research Environment

Week 5: Online workshop (1 hour) – Identifying and Justifying Resources

Week 6: Online workshop (1 hour) – Project Management and Delivery

Week 7: Online workshop (1.5 hour) – Developing your Funding Strategy

Week 8: Online cohort presentations (2 hours)

In addition to the eight sessions, participants will be assigned preparation/tasks in between sessions (30-60 mins), have the opportunity to book 1-2-1 Consultations (30 mins) to further develop their Funding Strategy, and attend online writing bootcamps (2 hours).

OUTPUTS

Over the duration of this course, you will produce:

  • a research strategy
  • a draft funding bid

Given limited capacity and to ensure these programmes are useful and effectively meet your needs, an application based approach is taken. Applications will be require approval from your Research Centre Director or PGR Supervisor.
