{"id":991,"date":"2023-03-13T13:25:37","date_gmt":"2023-03-13T13:25:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/?p=991"},"modified":"2023-03-13T13:23:28","modified_gmt":"2023-03-13T13:23:28","slug":"brengle-is-top-dog-at-teesside-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/2023\/03\/13\/brengle-is-top-dog-at-teesside-university\/","title":{"rendered":"Brengle is \u2018top dog\u2019 at Teesside University"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><strong>A very popular Golden Retriever has been awarded an \u2018Honorary Dogtorate\u2019 by Teesside University for his unwavering services to student mental health and wellbeing.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Brengle visits the University\u2019s Middlesbrough campus on a weekly basis alongside his owner Naomi Kelly, who is the\u00a0University\u2019s faith advisor and Salvation Army captain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Often, students are away from home for the first time, and could be dealing with things like exam pressures, money issues or the breakdown of a relationship. Not only do they provide a sense of companionship, but studies have also found that dogs in particular can trigger our happy hormones and decrease feelings or anxiety and sadness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">It\u2019s even said that pet therapy can boost confidence and improve self-esteem, which is often exactly what a busy student needs \u2013 I\u2019m sure we can all relate to that deadline dread!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Brengle\u2019s proud owner, Captain Kelly, said: \u201cOver the time he\u2019s been at Teesside University, there\u2019s been so many students saying how their mental health has been boosted and how they\u2019ve felt the love from him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">\u201cA lot of people who come to see Brengle might start off from a place of stress and by the time they leave, they\u2019re laughing and joking and talking about how relaxed they feel.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-994\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/03\/Img294967.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"612\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/03\/Img294967.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/03\/Img294967-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/03\/Img294967-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/03\/Img294967-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Brengle\u2019s visits to Teesside University are part of a wider programme of support to improve student mental wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Bishop, Assistant Director (Culture, Community and International) of Student and Library Services at Teesside University, who presented Brengle with his award, said: \u201cBrengle does a fantastic job, encouraging people to engage with our support services and providing them with love and reassurance.
