Whether you\u2019re new to Teesside or you\u2019ve lived in this fine region all your life, one thing that is certain \u2013 there\u2019s no mistaking that familiar Teesside twang.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Like every region, Teesside has its own rich dialect, and our location, nestled along the North-East coast, has led to the Teesside accent being recognised as almost a mishmash of a few others. We\u2019re located south of Tyneside, with its familiar Geordie accent, and north of Yorkshire, which also has its own distinct tones.<\/span><\/p>\n

Comedian Bob Mortimer, broadcaster Steph McGovern and actor Mark Benton are among those who regularly bring the Teesside accent to our television screens. But those not familiar with the quirks of our local dialect could easily remain stumped about certain phrases or words when chatting to anyone who is native to Teesside.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here at Teesside University, we\u2019ve launched our Belonging<\/a> campaign, which aims to foster inclusivity and a sense of home within our campus community. We realise that some phrases you might hear when you\u2019re out and about in the wider Teesside area may not be familiar.<\/span><\/p>\n

Through the campaign, you can submit your favourite Teesside phrases, along with those which might have been lost in translation, via our Lost in Translation<\/a> survey, as a way of helping the campaign team to build a Teesside lexicon.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a local myself, and a lover of all regional accents, the familiar sound of a Teesside voice is as delicious to me as a just-out-of-the-oven Parmo.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Here are just a few examples of phrases and words you might come across.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Now then!<\/span>
\n<\/strong><\/span>Often used as an informal greeting or way of saying hello.<\/span><\/p>\n

Adding the word \u2018like\u2019 and \u2018right\u2019 after almost everything<\/span>
\n<\/strong>A familiar quirk you might notice, is a tendency to add the word \u2018like\u2019 or \u2018right\u2019 to the end of sentences or sprinkle them into the conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Worritisright<\/span>
\n<\/strong><\/span>A familiar phrase in conversation, when the speaker is trying to emphasise a point.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Knoworrameanlike<\/span>
\n<\/strong><\/span>‘Do you know what I mean?\u2019 With the added inclusion of the obligatory \u2018like\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yerjokinarnyer<\/span>
\n<\/strong>You must surely be joking?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dead good an\u2019 that<\/span>
\n<\/strong><\/span>When something is really pleasing. See also <\/span>Mint.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Swear down<\/span>
\n<\/strong><\/span>To emphasise something and hammer home that the point being made is truthful.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eeya, mate!<\/span>
\n<\/strong><\/span>A typical phrase you might hear when someone out and about in Teesside is trying to catch your attention.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Doyle<\/span>
\n<\/strong><\/span>A gentle Teesside insult, akin to, ‘You silly person.\u2019\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s mint!<\/strong><\/span>
\nA compliment of the highest order.<\/span><\/p>\n

Devvoed<\/span>
\n<\/strong><\/span>Abbreviated way of saying devastated. Usually and often an over-statement, when the situation isn\u2019t at all devastating.<\/span><\/p>\n

Proper Baltic<\/span>
\n<\/strong><\/span>A cold blast of wintry weather. Usage: ‘It\u2019s proper Baltic out there\u2019 = it\u2019s rather chilly outside.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This arvo<\/span>
\n<\/strong><\/span>A simple abbreviation of ‘this afternoon\u2019. We do like an abbreviation.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

I wouldn\u2019t dare!<\/span>
\n<\/strong><\/span>A frequently used phrased which might make the uninitiated think someone is frightened by something. A disdainful remark to suggest something is undesirable.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sarah Bishop, from Teesside University\u2019s Student and Library Services, said: “Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and study for many different degrees, many of which take them out into the local community.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Language forms a bond, but it can also separate us, so our Belonging campaign aims to give students space to share something that makes them feel at home with their peers and to provide a space to ask questions about some of the colloquialisms and cultural differences that exist in the North-East. <\/span><\/p>\n

“Everyone brings something to the mix at Teesside and we want our university community to celebrate that and learn from it. We think of it as developing our Teesside Steel.”<\/span><\/p>\n
