Student societies. You\u2019ve probably heard a lot about them, but what exactly are they? Why should you join? And with 50 to choose from, how do you find the right one for you?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Nick Rodgers, from Teesside University\u2019s Students\u2019 Union, answers your questions.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Societies are extracurricular social groups which bring together students with shared interests, making joining one of the easiest ways to meet new people and make lifelong friends.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

As well as spicing up your social calendar, societies can help you try something fun and different, develop skills and build networks to support your employability.<\/span><\/p>\n

The best part? Our student societies are free to join this year, making this the perfect time for new and returning students to get acquainted with the 50 groups, such as tabletop gaming, knitting and table tennis.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are some tips to help you find the right society (or societies!) for you\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Check the Students\u2019 Union website <\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The Students\u2019 Union website<\/a> has full details of all of the student societies you can join, which means it\u2019s a great starting point for your search.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Look through the societies by category \u2013 Academic Studies<\/a>, Culture<\/a>, Faith and Inclusivity<\/a> and Pastimes<\/a> \u2013 and make a note of any that catch your eye. You\u2019ll be left with a shortlist of the societies you\u2019d like to find out more about.<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Visit a societies fair<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      During the academic year, we host societies fairs<\/a>. They\u2019re the perfect place to explore the societies on offer and get more information about individual groups directly from members.<\/span><\/p>\n

      1. Find us on social media<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Follow our dedicated account on Instagram @tusuactivities<\/a> and we\u2019ll keep you posted about our societies and the events they are hosting.<\/span><\/p>\n

        You can also find some individual societies on social media to get an idea of what they\u2019re about. Why not take a look at the Comics Society @teescomicssociety<\/a>?<\/span><\/p>\n

        1. Try some tasters<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Researching behind a screen will only get you so far. One of the best ways to find the right society for you is to try them out. So, why not pop along to some meetings for the societies you\u2019re interested in?<\/span><\/p>\n

          It\u2019ll help you get a sense of what being part of the society involves and meet the members. Plus, at the very least you\u2019ll get to try something new.<\/span><\/p>\n

          1. Contact group leaders<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            If you need more information about a society, such as how often they meet and what events or activities are involved, reach out to the group leaders. They\u2019re really friendly and happy to answer any questions you might have.<\/span><\/p>\n

            1. Make your own<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              In the unlikely event that you try all of our societies and still can\u2019t find the right one for you, we\u2019ve got you covered. You can set up your own! All you need to do is find ten students who are interested in joining and drop your short proposal in our form<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

              Now you\u2019ve found the right society for you, all that\u2019s left is joining. And there\u2019s just 4 simple steps to follow:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
