I realised that sites associated with death and disaster had mass appeal and global reach, in the sense that they were being packaged and commodified as a dark tourism brand.<\/p>\n<p>There are locations which offer a chance to educate people and provide insight, along with the opportunity to learn from the past when shaping the future.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/darker-travel-4\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3512\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/06\/darker-travel-4-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"518\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/06\/darker-travel-4-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/06\/darker-travel-4.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 518px) 85vw, 518px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where was the first \u2018dark tourism\u2019 destination you visited?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After watching the film Chernobyl Diaries, I visited the location in 2015 and quickly became fascinated. Having previously travelled to the site of the battlefields from the First and Second World War, the experience of\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/chernobyl-remembrance-day\">Chernobyl<\/a>\u00a0felt distinctly surreal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/darker-travel-5\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3513\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/06\/darker-travel-5-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/06\/darker-travel-5-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/06\/darker-travel-5.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 85vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>What was it like visiting this destination?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I had never experienced anything like it. The rules and regulations were frightening, not to mention visiting the ghost town of Pripyat, which was once home to 50,000 people and the workers of Chernobyl. It was quite surreal, and, even now, almost a decade later, it\u2019s difficult to describe. The whole site was ravaged by radiation and knowing that the levels were still high added a certain level of tension.\u00a0 I was in shock and awe at the scale of the tragedy and how nature had reclaimed the land.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/2024\/06\/10\/shining-a-spotlight-on-the-dawn-of-dark-tourism\/darker-side-travel-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3502\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3502\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/06\/Darker-Side-Travel-1-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"522\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/06\/Darker-Side-Travel-1-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/06\/Darker-Side-Travel-1.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 522px) 85vw, 522px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>How did this trip spark your interest in visiting other destinations?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I realised that I was really interested in watching television shows and films related to the macabre, and also that dark tourism was a global phenomenon and that I wasn\u2019t alone in seeking out these informative programmes.<\/p>\n<p>A visit to the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auschwitz.org\/en\/\">Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum<\/a>\u00a0led me to ask myself &#8211; why do people travel to places associated with death, disaster, and suffering? Each year, 1.2 million people visit Auschwitz, so there is something to be said about the appeal of dark tourism.<\/p>\n<p>I am currently working towards a doctorate at Teesside University, which involves an exploration of the impact that working at Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum has on its guides.\u00a0 I have worked alongside and interviewed several guides, who all spoke about the importance of educating tourists about the past.\u00a0 As part of my academic research, I\u2019m also creating a support guide for tour guides who are working tirelessly in the field for others.\u00a0 This is something I can give back to guides who dedicate their lives to educating others in such a moving way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/darker-side-travel-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3503\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/06\/darker-side-travel-2-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"557\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/06\/darker-side-travel-2-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/06\/darker-side-travel-2.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 557px) 85vw, 557px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why do you think there is so much interest in this kind of holiday destination?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It has changed my lens on the world and inspired me to aim to do more good. I have visited many dark sites, all of which affected my research and touched me, based on the preserved artefacts and the impact on people and place. I recently visited the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/movies\/2023\/08\/09\/william-friedkin-exorcist-steps-georgetown\/\">Exorcist steps <\/a>in Washington DC, the <a href=\"https:\/\/washington.org\/DC-guide-to\/arlington-national-cemetery\">Arlington Memorial<\/a>, also in DC, the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/911memorial.org\/\">9\/11 Memorial and Museum, <\/a>and, much closer to home, \u00a0the York Dungeon \u2013 all dark sites which educate uniquely.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/2024\/06\/10\/shining-a-spotlight-on-the-dawn-of-dark-tourism\/darker-side-travel-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3504\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3504\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/06\/darker-side-travel-3-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/06\/darker-side-travel-3-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/06\/darker-side-travel-3.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 572px) 85vw, 572px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>What can people expect from your talk? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I continue to explore and research dark tourism, as it highlights sustainable tourism, tourist behaviour and the preservation of historic effects to educate future generations.
