From a dental clinic to a police station, Teesside University certainly has a lot to offer. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, whether you\u2019re a fresher or a returning student, you might not have had chance to see everything just yet.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

So, join us as we look at 10 surprising facilities you can find right here on campus\u2026<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"Dental<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Dental clinic\u00a0 |\u00a0 Centuria\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Who would have thought that you could take a trip to the dentist without stepping off campus?<\/span><\/p>\n

The dental clinic offers students, staff and members of the public can get free access* to <\/span><\/span>general dental care, diagnosing of oral diseases, and treatment plans to maintain and restore oral health.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s run by dental students and supervised by fully qualified dental hygienists or therapists who are all General Dental Council-registered clinicians. <\/span><\/span>Email the dental clinic reception<\/a> to request a referral form to pass on to your dentist for completion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

*You must be registered with a dentist to access the student dental facility as treatments can only be provided under referral from an external dental practitioner.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Students<\/p>\n

2. TV studio\u00a0 |\u00a0 Athena<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Happy news for anyone with an interest in media, journalism and broadcasting – you can find a TV studio, radio studios and a newsroom right here on campus.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fully kitted out with industry-standard equipment, the TV and radio studios enable students to record podcasts, programmes and news segments as part of their studies. It all comes together in the newsroom, where students write stories, deliver reports and plan news packages.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even if you\u2019re not studying a media-related degree, you can volunteer to contribute to TUXtra<\/a>, the University\u2019s news outlet, and access these facilities to create your own content.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Physiotherapy3. Hydrotherapy pool\u00a0 |\u00a0 Centuria South<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A world record holder, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist and a football club have all benefited from Teesside University\u2019s state-of-the-art hydrotherapy pool<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Located in the Centuria South building, it is used to boost injury recovery times and athletic performance. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The unique facility is a key aspect of rehabilitation and training programmes for users, which range from professionals in sport to patients and those who book in for single or group sessions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

4. Immersion suite\u00a0 |\u00a0 BIOS<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

When you think about it, healthcare professionals aren\u2019t always able to administer treatment in the familiar clinical setting of a hospital. And healthcare training should reflect that. <\/span>That\u2019s where the augmented reality lab comes in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Visuals, sound and high-fidelity mannequins are used to immerse health students <\/span>in a wide range of nonobvious environments such as inside an ambulance, care home, or even a football stadium!<\/span><\/p>\n

They are able to practise real-world scenarios in a safe learning space and get a sense of what working outside the clinical setting is really like. <\/span>For a closer look at the immersion suite facility in action, watch the video<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Flight simulator\u00a0 |\u00a0 Stephenson<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Stephenson building is home to the University\u2019s very own Merlin Engineering Flight Simulator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This allows aerospace and aeronautical engineering students to get in and ‘flight test\u2019 computerised aircraft models produced as part of their studies, which can either be based on existing aircrafts or original designs.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s super impressive, and it\u2019s giving serious Top Gun vibes, so it\u2019s going on the list.<\/span><\/p>\n

6. Climbing wall\u00a0 |\u00a0 Olympia\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Our sports facilities<\/a> include a gym, squash courts, 4G pitch and sauna, but perhaps the most surprising of all is our climbing wall<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s available to students, staff and members of the public, and you can book casual climbing sessions as you please following a successful induction class.<\/span><\/p>\n

Access to the climbing wall as well as a host of other sports facilities and activities is included in the health and fitness membership<\/a>, which costs \u00a340 per semester for students. You can also pay per session.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Uniformed<\/span><\/p>\n

7. Police station\u00a0 |\u00a0 Crime Scene House 1<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, you read that right. Teesside University has its very own (replica) police station.<\/span><\/p>\n

Featuring an <\/span>interview room, examination room, custody office and front desk, it is used by students in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities & Law. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The replica police station <\/span>sits alongside Teesside University Law School\u2019s<\/a> mock courtroom, which allows students to simulate hearings as part of their studies, and the Law Clinic, which provides free legal advice and representation for members of the community.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

8. Shop\u00a0 |\u00a0 Students\u2019 Union<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Forgotten to pick up some milk during your big shop? Looking to grab a quick snack between lectures? Not to worry – there\u2019s a shop<\/a> right in Campus Heart on the ground floor of the Students\u2019 Union building.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can grab a sandwich, stationery and art supplies, sweet treats and much more. It even stocks uni merch like hoodies and tote bags if that\u2019s what you\u2019re after.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Inside<\/span><\/p>\n

9. Business incubator\u00a0 |\u00a0 Victoria\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Students, staff and graduates with innovative business ideas or plans to expand existing ventures are supported through Teesside Launchpad<\/a> and its on-campus business incubator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Home to a wide range of burgeoning businesses and with ties to a number of largely successful start-ups, it is part of the University\u2019s \u00a35.6m Enterprise Zone found in the historic Victoria building. <\/span><\/p>\n

The contemporary facility provides access to a commercial workspace, meeting rooms, recording equipment and everything else you need to get your business off the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n

10. The Library\u00a0 |\u00a0 Campus Heart<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t get me wrong, it\u2019s not the fact that a university has a library which is surprising – it\u2019s what you can find inside…<\/span><\/p>\n

Designed by architect and presenter George Clarke, as seen on TV, the Library<\/a> stands proudly in Campus Heart. <\/span>Inside, each floor is decorated to represent one of the seasons and has a different noise level. So, if you work best in silence, make your way to the third floor, or if you prefer a bit of background noise, the first floor is for you. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

With popular refreshment facilities on the ground floor, you can recharge while you\u2019re working. Plus<\/span>, it has moving bookshelves – now that certainly was a surprise when I started my studies! They remind me of the moving staircases in Hogwarts, and they definitely made finding books more fun.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
