It\u2019s there to use if you ever need first-aid or urgent help when you\u2019re on campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">The app allows you to call for help should you need it and alerts our security staff to your situation and current location so they can help you quickly and effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">You can download the SafeZone app on to your smartphone or tablet and sign up to it using your Teesside University email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2670\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/02\/Picture2.jpg\" alt=\"A woman walking alone in the park\" width=\"823\" height=\"658\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/02\/Picture2.jpg 823w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/02\/Picture2-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2024\/02\/Picture2-768x614.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">Personal safety<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">If you\u2019re walking, always try to take the shortest and most direct route, and keep your belongings close to you and any valuable items out of sight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">We all like listening to our favourite songs, but avoid wearing headphones or ear buds when in isolated locations \u2013 this will keep you more aware of your surroundings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">Also, if you do see anything suspicious, please report it to our security team. While having fun, it\u2019s important to take steps to stay safe, so keep this advice in mind&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">1. Stick with friends<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">It can be easier than you realise to become separated from your friends on a night out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">Think about creating a group chat with your friends to keep in touch throughout the night. GPS phone locator apps like Life360 and Find My Friends can be really helpful when shared with trusted individuals too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">If you\u2019re breaking off from a group to step outside or go to the toilet, always take a friend so you\u2019re with someone you know and trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">2. Don\u2019t leave your drink unattended<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">Although it\u2019s rare, there\u2019s unfortunately a risk of drink spiking on a night out, so never leave your drink unattended. If you need to leave for a moment, ask a trusted friend to watch your drink for you, and make sure to order your own drinks from the bar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">3. Stay alert when getting home<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">At the end of the night, head home with friends and make sure everyone knows how and when each of you are getting home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">Consider pre-booking a taxi with a reputable company or driver so plans are in place ahead of time. Get the details of the vehicle and agree a price in advance so you can have money set aside for your journey home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">We wouldn\u2019t recommend walking home after a night out, but if you do then make sure you to stay in well-lit, busy areas. If so, you can register to use our secure bike lockers. The bike shelters are controlled through card entry, so always ensure the door is closed behind you to prevent unauthorised entry. They are based in the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">University Library and are on hand 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
