And how do you come to terms with that?<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;font-size: 18px\">According to research by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scope.org.uk\/\">Scope<\/a>, up to 80% of those registered as disabled have a hidden disability. That\u2019s up to 10m people in the UK &#8211; and increasingly, we\u2019re seeing more people diagnosed as adults.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">Here, Donna Rodgers, Learning and Development Manager at Teesside University, shares her experiences of living with a hidden disability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2535 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/Untitled-design-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/Untitled-design-1.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/Untitled-design-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 85vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">Guest blog: Donna Rodgers, Learning and Development Manager at Teesside University.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">As a child, like many in the early 80s, I didn\u2019t understand dyslexia.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\"> There was limited awareness, and the assumption that those with dyslexia couldn\u2019t read or write. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">I did ok at school, and I was good at art, sports, science. I understood several subjects and was able to apply learning but struggled to recall information. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">Whilst I did not perform as well as expected in my GCSEs, I didn\u2019t think I had dyslexia, as I could read and write.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2544 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/aaron-burden-NN3bYSPU2tQ-unsplash-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/aaron-burden-NN3bYSPU2tQ-unsplash-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/aaron-burden-NN3bYSPU2tQ-unsplash-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/aaron-burden-NN3bYSPU2tQ-unsplash-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/aaron-burden-NN3bYSPU2tQ-unsplash.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">I was first diagnosed with dyslexia in my mid-to-late twenties. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">I started a new position involving information processing, writing, reporting, and presenting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">Whilst I could do the job well, my struggles around writing, processing huge amounts of information, and remembering facts a few weeks after learning them really knocked my confidence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">True to being \u2018consciously incompetent\u2019, my insecurities crept in. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">I am grateful to a colleague and line manager at the time who encouraged and supported me to get assessed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">Subsequently, the diagnostic showed what others had seen but I had failed to understand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">I felt uncomfortable with the diagnosis at the time. I allowed it to knock my confidence and, apart from with my immediate family and colleagues, I was fearful about being open and honest about it, especially when applying for jobs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">In retrospect, the diagnosis made perfect sense, provided clarity and reasoning about my challenges, and allowed me to understand my uniqueness and strengths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2546 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/ashkan-forouzani-m0l9NBCivuk-unsplash-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/ashkan-forouzani-m0l9NBCivuk-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/ashkan-forouzani-m0l9NBCivuk-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/ashkan-forouzani-m0l9NBCivuk-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/ashkan-forouzani-m0l9NBCivuk-unsplash.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">Now, with a rewarding and successful career, I can reflect on my journey from not fully understanding my challenges to where I am today. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">I know who I am and how dyslexia can both impact and strengthen my situations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">On a good day, I perform well. However, under extreme stress or when feeling overwhelmed, I can struggle to articulate myself, structure my thoughts, remember details I rely on, or recall things I need to say in the moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">Being diagnosed with dyslexia gave me a clear insight into why I am good at most things physical and practical, including sports. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">I may not be great at constructing written word, but I can do it, it just takes longer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">I believe my dyslexia allows me to bring a different mindset to work because I have experienced prejudice and adversity and, through my own growth, learned to be flexible and resilient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">I have learned that coping strategies and support are crucial, and it\u2019s important to not hide, be open and honest about who you are and what you bring to the table. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">It\u2019s true that living with dyslexia can be a challenge, but it also brings so many positive skills that I have learned are crucial to today\u2019s business success. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">I may require support, flexibility, open-mindedness, encouragement and, at times, some reasonable adjustments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 19px\">Then again, so do many people in the workplace who don\u2019t have a neurodivergent diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2626\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/david-travis-zYT6u51a0BU-unsplash-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Sunflower against a blue background.\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/david-travis-zYT6u51a0BU-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/david-travis-zYT6u51a0BU-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/david-travis-zYT6u51a0BU-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/11\/david-travis-zYT6u51a0BU-unsplash.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;font-family: helvetica\"><strong>Support for students<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;font-size: 18px\">If you believe you may have a disability that hasn\u2019t been diagnosed, the first step is to seek advice from your GP. Your GP can assess your symptoms and may refer you for an assessment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;font-size: 18px\">Students at Teesside University can access support and advice throughout their university journey. You can get tailored support, help with applying for Disabled Students Allowances (DSAs) and reasonable adjustments for your studies.
