{"id":1713,"date":"2023-06-01T09:46:34","date_gmt":"2023-06-01T08:46:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/?p=1713"},"modified":"2023-06-02T11:23:50","modified_gmt":"2023-06-02T10:23:50","slug":"before-they-were-big","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/2023\/06\/01\/before-they-were-big\/","title":{"rendered":"Before they were big\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">As the Arctic Monkeys prepare to play at Middlesbrough\u2019s Riverside Stadium, there will be lucky music fans out there who can recall seeing them in much smaller venues on local soil, before they went on to bigger things.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Long before they headlined at Glastonbury or sold out international venues, Alex Turner and his Sheffield bandmates graced the stage at several much more humble places across our region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: helvetica\">This will be the first time they\u2019ve performed in the area since the &#8216;secret gig\u2019 back in 2007 &#8211; when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gazettelive.co.uk\/news\/local-news\/town-hall-queues-1am-must-3753776\">hordes of fans queued overnight for tickets<\/a> to see them at Middlesbrough Town Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;font-size: 18px\">One of the Talking Teessider\u2019s other halves even recalls slying off work to get himself tickets (totally worth it).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Maybe you were also lucky enough to see them back in 2005 when they played at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gazettelive.co.uk\/whats-on\/music-nightlife-news\/paid-pizza-4-tickets-secret-25095197\">Stockton\u2019s KU Bar <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">with a setlist that included <em>I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, Mardy Bum<\/em> and <em>When the Sun Goes Down<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/2023\/05\/25\/before-they-were-big\/arctic-monkeys-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1716\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1716\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/05\/Arctic-Monkeys-3-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"586\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/05\/Arctic-Monkeys-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/05\/Arctic-Monkeys-3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/05\/Arctic-Monkeys-3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/05\/Arctic-Monkeys-3.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 586px) 85vw, 586px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Other local venues, such The Empire and The Arena in Middlesbrough, along with the Georgian Theatre in Stockton, also played host to the band back in the early to mid-noughties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">And it\u2019s got us at Talking Teesside thinking about our local venues &#8211; It dates back to 1897, with the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy and escapologist Harry Houdini providing the entertainment back in the day. Around 125 years on, the venue is still drawing in big names and crowds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">As well as hosting the Arctic Monkeys, music fans have seen the likes of Johnny Marr, Ellie Goulding, Bullet for my Valentine and You Me At Six in this glorious building. These days, clubbers might need to travel to Ibiza or nab tickets for a major festival to see big name DJs such as Fatboy Slim and Calvin Harris, but they are among the long list of DJs who have graced the decks at The Empire in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>The Arena<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/11065676@N00\/8505706845\/in\/photostream\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8375\/8505706845_c7acda6726_c.jpg\" alt=\"Pavilion Theatre (Arena) Middlesbrough\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>Image by Chris <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/11065676@N00\/8505706845\/in\/photostream\/\">on Flickr<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Currently standing empty, this building has had several incarnations over the years. Depending on your age and music of choice, you\u2019ll remember it as a mecca for rock, punk, indie or dance music DJs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Once known as the Rock Garden, it hosted the likes of the Sex Pistols, Siouxie and the Banshees, The Stranglers and The Damned. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Later reopening as The Arena, based over two floors with a cavernous main area, it became a hugely popular venue among clubbers and dance music DJs, along with the \u201890s indie-scene, hosting bands like The Libertines and Elastica. Back in 1994, there was an appearance by a fresh-faced Oasis, around the time they released <em>Supersonic<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>The Cornerhouse<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/11065676@N00\/7307097602\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7080\/7307097602_c3472404c9_c.jpg\" alt=\"Middlesbrough Cornerhouse\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Image by Chris <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/11065676@N00\/7307097602\">on Flickr\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Razed to the ground at the start of this year as part of major work to revamp Middlesbrough\u2019s railway station, The Cornerhouse previously stood empty for around a decade. Back in its infancy, it was a smallish venue, which expanded over the years as it opened further back underneath the train station.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Famed for its 69p Thursdays and Brighton Beach indie night Fridays, it was one of those venues that catered for different music genres on different nights. The venue has also hosted performances by the likes of Arcade Fire, The 1975, Wolf Alice and Blossoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">As well as continuing to champion local talent, the venue also regularly\u00a0 pulls in the crowds with an array of tribute bands, from Antarctic Monkeys to Fleetingwood Mac. More recently, KU hosted a performance by indie legend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gazettelive.co.uk\/whats-on\/music-nightlife-news\/pete-doherty-walking-ku-two-26740232\">Pete Doherty!<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>Westgarth Social Club, Middlesbrough<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">There has to be mention of this unassuming little venue, known for its support of grassroots musical talent. While most local bands and musicians will have played there at some point, the club over the years hosted gigs by the likes of Wolf Alice, The Vaccines and Catfish and the Bottlemen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/2023\/05\/25\/before-they-were-big\/concert\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1727\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1727\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/05\/concert-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"641\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/05\/concert-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/05\/concert-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/05\/concert-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/talkingteesside\/files\/2023\/05\/concert.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong>The Georgian Theatre<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">This listed building which dates back to 1766 is located amongst Stockton\u2019s thriving microbar scene.
