{"id":913,"date":"2010-07-08T12:28:57","date_gmt":"2010-07-08T11:28:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eat.scm.tees.ac.uk\/blog\/?p=913"},"modified":"2017-01-26T11:06:59","modified_gmt":"2017-01-26T11:06:59","slug":"games-just-play-or-can-we-learn-from-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/2010\/07\/08\/games-just-play-or-can-we-learn-from-them\/","title":{"rendered":"Games &#8211; just play or can we learn from them?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve been collecting a few articles on video games and what we can learn from them for a little while, and after two comments on presentations at the <a href=\"http:\/\/web-dev-csc.gre.ac.uk\/conference\/conf62\/index.php?p=663\" target=\"_blank\">Future Learningscapes<\/a> conference yesterday at the University of Greenwich,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>In virtual worlds session at <a title=\"#flscapes\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23flscapes\" target=\"_blank\">#flscapes<\/a> VWs have a long history it would seem. &#8216;SecondLife is not a game\u2019 being emphasised.\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/romieh\/status\/17939060117\" target=\"_blank\">tweet<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Surprised that it\u2019s so critical to avoid referring to SL as game in schools &#8211; doesn\u2019t game based learning have a place in schools? (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/romieh\/status\/17940945819\" target=\"_blank\">tweet<\/a>),<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I think it\u2019s time to get them listed here! The Chronicle of Higher Education has an article about <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/5-Lessons-Professors-Can-Learn\/63708\/\" target=\"_blank\">5 things that can be learnt from video games<\/a>. They are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Give frequent &amp; detailed feedback<\/li>\n<li>Test before going live (this is focussed on making sure a student has commented on scenarios before you roll them out, but also reminds you to build formative testing, allowing students too to make mistakes and learn from them)<\/li>\n<li>Game narratives answer the question \u201cWhy are we doing this?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t be afraid of fun<\/li>\n<li>Not all content works as a game<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Listen to Will Wright (creator of the Sims) talk through them:<\/p>\n<p>I love that he says &#8220;play <em>is<\/em> a fundamental educational technology&#8230;as a culture we\u2019ve just forgotten that&#8221;. I\u2019m visualising document dumps as he says it and I can\u2019t suppress a smile! TechHappy re-inforces just how many educational games there are available (<a href=\"http:\/\/techhappy.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/21\/60-educational-game-sites-that-you%E2%80%99ve-probably-never-seen\/\" target=\"_blank\">this post discusses 60<\/a>). Some of them are very much for kids, but let\u2019s face it, these kids become our students. Right at the end of Wright\u2019s interview with the Chronicle, he says for him &#8220;motivating a kid is much more important than educating one&#8221;, and I understand where he\u2019s coming from when he says so, but if we can educate them as well as motivate them, not to mention enthuse and engage them, then so much the better. If you want to make the mental shift between CBeebies-type games practising basic maths, then have a go at one of these <a href=\"http:\/\/www.missiontolearn.com\/2008\/04\/learning-games-for-change\/\" target=\"_blank\">26 Learning Games to Change the World<\/a> &#8211; much in my mind as we discuss the potential for Second Life to help students learning about NGO disaster management logistics. Here\u2019s a description of one of them:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.3rdworldfarmer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">3rd World Farmer<\/a> \u2026 aims at simulating the real-world mechanisms that cause and sustain poverty in 3rd World countries. In the game, the player gets to manage an African farm, and is soon confronted with the often difficult choices that poverty and conflict necessitate. We find this kind of experience efficient at making the issues relevant to people, because players tend to invests their hopes in a game character whose fate depends on him. We aim at making the player \u201cexperience\u201d the injustices, rather than being told about them, so as to stimulate a deeper and more personal reflection on the topics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And we can learn more from video games than just to learn to learn, we can also take note of more &#8216;common sense\u2019 things to apply to everything else we design and deliver.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticbt.com\/blog\/6-things-video-games-can-teach-us-about-web-usability\/\" target=\"_blank\">6 Things Video Games can Teach us about Usability<\/a> highlights some of the tacit information that we subconsciously appreciate in good web site experiences like Amazon or Ebay.
