{"id":6765,"date":"2019-03-13T16:44:12","date_gmt":"2019-03-13T16:44:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/?p=6765"},"modified":"2019-03-13T18:29:39","modified_gmt":"2019-03-13T18:29:39","slug":"teams-exemplars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/2019\/03\/13\/teams-exemplars\/","title":{"rendered":"Practice-based Exemplars of Microsoft Teams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the LTE conference held at Teesside University on March 7th 2019, the Digital Learning Team shared some Practice-based Exemplars of Effective use of Microsoft Teams in Learning and Teaching.<\/p>\n<p>The exemplars were well received and sparked some discussion among participants on how Teams could be meaningfully used and embedded within modules.<\/p>\n<h6>Features of Microsoft Teams<\/h6>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/teams.microsoft.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft Teams<\/a> can be used by anyone within Teesside University using their staff or student credentials.\u00a0 A team has various features to help manage any project or group activity.\u00a0 This includes a default General conversation area (or channel) where the whole group can post messages and share files.\u00a0 In addition to the General channel, more channels can be created for discussion and resource sharing on particular topics.\u00a0 A real advantage to working with Teams is the ability to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/2019\/02\/28\/teams-collaborate\/\">collaborate<\/a> synchronously with team members on Word, Excel or PowerPoint files uploaded to the team.\u00a0 This saves uploading updated versions as everything is automatically saved.<\/p>\n<p>In the session we explored these features with the following four exemplars:<\/p>\n<h6>Exemplar Robert Hughes (SoHSC) &#8211; Ice breaker activity<\/h6>\n<p>Robert Hughes (Nursing) created a team for the whole module initially as a social hub to quickly share personal introductions. On the Digital Development Programme one of the tasks was to\u00a0 create a Sway presentation. Robert created a personal introduction to himself and his family for this Sway task. To facilitate their activities, Ben (English) created a separate team, each one consisting of about 4 or 5 students. The students used their teams to coordinate their activities, motivate each other and essentially keep the projects going.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6780\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6780\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/2019\/03\/13\/teams-exemplars\/ben-lamb-exemplar-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6780\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6780 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/files\/2019\/03\/Ben-Lamb-Exemplar-2-1017x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"755\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/files\/2019\/03\/Ben-Lamb-Exemplar-2-1017x1024.png 1017w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/files\/2019\/03\/Ben-Lamb-Exemplar-2-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/files\/2019\/03\/Ben-Lamb-Exemplar-2-298x300.png 298w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/files\/2019\/03\/Ben-Lamb-Exemplar-2-768x773.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/files\/2019\/03\/Ben-Lamb-Exemplar-2-45x45.png 45w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/files\/2019\/03\/Ben-Lamb-Exemplar-2.png 1075w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6780\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Conversation area messages show the general encouragement among students within the group.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>This example shows the students having a quick chat about what they have done, and other students making suggestions.\u00a0 Other interesting aspects were the use of animated GIFs to correspond with each other, the sharing of useful web links, and general encouragement for each other in the group.<\/div>\n<div>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6>Exemplar Charles Tait and Michael Hall (SCDA)- Teams for recording project work activity<\/h6>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Charles Tait and Michael Hall (Design) used Teams to get their students thinking about how to keep information regarding a particular project. In this example, it was developing a marketing strategy for a chocolate cake. Whilst the students used a face-to-face approach, they made great use of the team to keep a record of the day\u2019s activities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/2019\/03\/13\/teams-exemplars\/charlestaitmichaelhall\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6769\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6769 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/files\/2019\/03\/CharlesTaitMichaelHall-1024x679.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"497\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/files\/2019\/03\/CharlesTaitMichaelHall-1024x679.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/files\/2019\/03\/CharlesTaitMichaelHall-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/files\/2019\/03\/CharlesTaitMichaelHall-768x509.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/files\/2019\/03\/CharlesTaitMichaelHall.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>Example of students recording their face to face project work activity through their group work team.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>One student asked another student in the Team to share a photo of the mood board. When the board was uploaded, it can be seen that this was then &#8220;liked&#8221;. Using the &#8220;Like&#8221; feature in the conversation area is a great way to build interaction into a team, and replicates typical social media activity.<\/div>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6>Helen Carney (SSED) &#8211; Team channels for problem-based group work<\/h6>\n<div>In this module (Biological Methods) students were tasked with working in teams to solve a biologically relevant problem.\u00a0\u00a0A large cohort of 125 students used a module based Teams as a platform to collaborate and communicate for their group project.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The general channel and conversation tab was used for ice breaker activities and for sharing useful resources amongst the cohort.\u00a0 A separate channel for asking questions to staff was also created and was actively used by the students.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6775\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6775\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/2019\/03\/13\/teams-exemplars\/teams-questions-for-staff\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6775\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6775 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/files\/2019\/03\/Teams-Questions-for-Staff-1024x735.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/files\/2019\/03\/Teams-Questions-for-Staff-1024x735.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/files\/2019\/03\/Teams-Questions-for-Staff-300x215.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/files\/2019\/03\/Teams-Questions-for-Staff-768x551.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/files\/2019\/03\/Teams-Questions-for-Staff.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6775\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A &#8216;Questions for Staff\u2019 channel.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>24 groups were set up as separate channels.
