Making information available in digestible portions\u00a0provides\u00a0students with\u00a0the opportunity to work through material in stages, allowing them to focus on topics, which\u00a0results in deeper, more\u00a0meaningful learning.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Recording bite-size videos<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Today\u2019s learners are flooded with a sometimes\u00a0overwhelming wealth of information and\u00a0have constant\u00a0interaction with\u00a0digital social spaces, chats and apps on their mobile devices. They are accustomed to media rich content and need the flexibility to learn on the go, as and when it suits them.<\/p>\n<p>Video is an increasingly popular source of content on both mobile and desktop.\u00a0 It tops the search results and presents itself as an enticing alternative to learners (for further information,\u00a0please read our article\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/2017\/02\/27\/why-use-video-in-your-learning-and-teaching\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Why Use Video in Your Learning and Teaching<\/a>).\u00a0Tutors can harness this technology, to\u00a0creatively enhance\u00a0their practice and provide short yet substantial content which is appropriate to current learning trends.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There are many\u00a0factors\u00a0which contribute to\u00a0how recording video in short bite-size chunks helps learners engage with content. Use natural break points within the topics to segment the content and think about the <strong>flow and progression of content<\/strong>. Focused, bite-sized videos are particularly useful for revision, where students can access information easily instead of skipping through a lengthy video searching for a specific topic.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Avoid information overload<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Research suggests that a person\u2019s working memory has the capacity to store only a\u00a0small amount of information at a given time. Grouping content into manageable segments aids learners to remember, recall and apply the knowledge more effectively in the\u00a0long term. \u00a0<strong>Annotations<\/strong> and references to <strong>diagrams\/visuals<\/strong> are excellent memory cues in recordings, as opposed to a continuous stream of text for example.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Format your content<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>If your video features PowerPoint (or any other package) to present lecture materials, format and organise the content on the slides clearly. \u00a0With the addition of voiceover, students are more likely to listen to the audio whilst they skim through the text.\u00a0 So, try using <strong>bullet points, numbered lists<\/strong> or <strong>highlight key text<\/strong> and <strong>subheadings<\/strong> to structure textual content making it easier for students to digest.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Manage video duration<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>This is most certainly one of the very first things students look at before they click &#8216;play\u2019. Keeping the video short and concise is good for\u00a0both staff and students.\u00a0 By recording smaller, shorter clips, you can update the content easily without spending an extensive amount of time or resources. \u00a0Students on the other hand, are more likely to be\u00a0attracted to a short, 10-minute video compared to lengthy lecture. The recommended duration is between <strong>10 \u2013 15 minutes<\/strong>, where students can learn on any platform, anytime \u2013 on the bus, during breaks or just before a session.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Make the most of ReView features<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>ReView automatically adds an index by extracting PowerPoint slide titles into a table of content, which acts as chapter markers in the recording enabling users to skip to the relevant slide. \u00a0Users can also search for key words or phrases present in the recording.
