This blog post will hopefully showcase some of the more impactful changes that have been implemented.

Improved Navigation

Whilst in a module, you may have noticed the ability to jump to another module from the Modules menu item in the top left hand corner. Previously, this let you access your most recently used modules, speeding up your workflow. Now, you can also access any module that you have set as a Favourite – again, making your working practice more efficient.

Release Conditions

Blackboard have increased the capabilities of the Release Condition functionality. Content can still be set to be “Visible to Students” or “Hidden from Students”, and the ability to release content based on date and time. Now, when you create a “release condition” there are extra options based on Activity. As before, you can create a release condition based on the students obtaining a specific score from a marked piece of work. You can also create a release condition based on whether or not a student has “opened” an item. This could be a test, or a Blackboard document, or some uploaded content.

Workflow

Create your item as usual, and select Release Condition when it is created (this can be found directly underneath the item’s title, default set to be “Hidden From Students”). Under Activity, you are prompted for the Item, and when you click into the “Choose Item” box, you can search for the item by typing in its name. Locate the specific content item, and then set the Requirement as desired.

In the screen shot below, you can see the “Assessment ICA 1” has been selected. Because this is a marked assignment, the requirements include Opened, Attempt Submitted, Custom Range and 1 Point or Higher. If the Item was NOT marked, we would only have the option to select Opened.

Scenario One

You have three assessments that the students need to sit in consecutive order, all of which need to be graded manually. That is, they do Assessment 1, then 2 and finally 3. Previously, we could achieve this using the “Force Sequence” option in a Learning Module. We couldn’t use a Release Condition as it used to only work on graded work (and associated mark). As the assessments need to be graded manually, the next assessment would only become available after it has been manually marked. Now, you can use the “Attempt Submitted” option in a Release Condition to control the flow. That is, make assessment 2 available after the student has opened assessment 1 and so on.

Scenario Two

You have a test, but want to ensure students have engaged with certain learning materials in a Blackboard Document. You can now use a Release Condition applied to the Test, and under the Activity option, you can select the specific content under the Item option, and under Requirement, select “Opened”.

Discussions and Journals

When using discussions, a second due date has been added, allowing for greater depth of discussions that potentially evolve over time. For example, you can use the first due date to act as a reminder for, say, an initial conversation. You could then use the second due date as a second reminder that students need to come back to the conversation and respond to some of the comments that have been made. This could encourage more discussion, which in turn can deepen the learning experience.

Additionally, instructors now have the ability to stop the discussion after the due date.

For both discussions and journals, there is now a dedicated space to add a Description for either, accessible within the Settings of each space. This allows for further context to be added, making your module a more engaging space for students.

Blackboard Documents

If you’ve not used Blackboard Documents before, now is a great time to start! For those unaware, a Blackboard document is a great way to make content in your module more engaging. It allows you to create content in a way that moves your module away from being simply a “filing cabinet” into a more dynamic space for students. A document allows you to add images, embed audio and video (including videos stored in the ReView Video Library), and organise the layout into four columns. You can add simple knowledge checks to break up the content, allowing students a space to reflect on the material. Furthermore, Blackboard Documents are easy to edit, allowing you to make changes to things like dates and timelines.

Below is a screen shot of a typical Document. You can see how images can be added and manipulated into columns, along with dividing lines to help break up content.

From the above image, you can see students can leverage the power of Blackboard Ally (by clicking the A icon in the top right), giving them access to a wide variety of different formats to help those students who might need extra support.

If you’ve not used Documents before, a top tip to get started is to try using the “Convert a file” option. This works especially well with text based content (such as Word Documents and Adobe PDFs).

Finally, a feature that’s been implemented for some time, you have the option to select from 4 pre-set styles for your text blocks – choose from “Question”, “Tip, “Key Point” and “Next Steps”.

AI Conversations

Blackboard continues to develop this new and exciting tool, adding the facility to limit a conversation to s specific number of messages. This can help keeping the conversation focused on the topic, as well as communicating expectations to the students. To further aid this, students have a clear indication of how many messages are left in the exercise.

To make the conversation even more realistic, you can also set a timer to limit the conversation to a precise time. And don’t worry – any student who has a time-based accommodation will not be disadvantaged. Their accommodation will come into effect here should you use the timer functionality.

Turnitin Audio and Video Feedback

Back by popular demand, you can now give students audio feedback when grading in Turnitin. In addition, you can now include a video recording as well. Both options come complete with closed captions, a feature that wasn’t available previously, and one which we are sure will come as a welcome addition. Both audio and video recordings can be up to 5 minutes in duration.

For further support and guidance on any of the above, please contact us at CeLTIE@tees.ac.uk

Introduction Over the past few months, there have been some exciting updates regarding Blackboard Ultra and associated technologies.
