There are\u00a0<\/span>several<\/span>\u00a0different theories of reflection\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>education. For example, the Kolb Experiential Learning Cycle and the Gibbs Reflective Cycle.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Kolb Cycle involves four steps<\/span>; concrete experience \u2013 doing or having the experience, reflective observation \u2013 reflecting on the experience, abstract\u00a0<\/span>conceptualisation<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 learning from the experience and active experimentation \u2013 trying out what has be<\/span>en learned.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Gibbs Cycle however has six steps;\u00a0<\/span>description of what happened, the feelings during the event, evaluating what was good and bad about the experience, analysis of what else can be made of the situation, a co<\/span>nclusion on what else could have been done and finally an action plan of you would change the situation if it arose again.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These theories of reflection are\u00a0<\/span>great to use\u00a0within an assessment piece or a group working session, as it is useful to understand the way your students\u00a0are thinking thr<\/span>oughout a project. There are\u00a0<\/span>a number of<\/span>\u00a0different tools that you can use to encourage reflection within your students.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Journals\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

A journal is quite\u00a0<\/span>similar to<\/span>\u00a0a blog except the entries that are made are completely private to a single student\u00a0and their tutor<\/span>s. This can be another useful way for students to keep a log of their project\u00a0<\/span>and reflect on what they have learned. Students who are on placement often find that journals are a great way to stay in touch with their placement supervisor to update them on how the placement is going.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Discussion Boards<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Discussion boards are a good way\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>carrying<\/span>\u00a0out group work in an online setting.\u00a0<\/span>It is a way for students to reflect and\u00a0<\/span>collaborate on a task whilst a tutor supervises the conversation.\u00a0<\/span>It is also a good way for students to ask questions in a setting where other students can see, as it may be reassuring for other students to know that someone else may be having the same problems. Due to the current<\/span>\u00a0mode of Hybrid Learning, some students can feel isolated<\/span>\u00a0and so\u00a0<\/span>having a discussion board can help students to connect with their other learners.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mahara is another great way for students to reflect. It is an e-portfolio system that students can use to reflect on their academic journey. It\u2019s not associated with a specific\u00a0module, but\u00a0stays with students\u00a0<\/span>throughtout<\/span>\u00a0their time at Teesside.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
