SUMMARY:Students’ academic skills development in a culturally diverse learning environment: How the Language Centre can help.
DESCRIPTION:Students’ academic skills development in a culturally diverse learning environment: How the Language Centre can help. \nIt is well recognised that teaching students in a culturally diverse learning environment is extremely rewarding\, but also present challenges\, both for academics and students.  Such challenges will be daunting for those who have limited experience of supporting and teaching overseas students\, but also for students experiencing for the first time an international classroom. \nThis session will address the following questions: \n\nWho is in the Language Centre and what does it do?\nWhat are the main challenges facing students who are not native speakers of English?\nWhat are these ‘academic skills’ that all students are expected to come to university with or to develop?\nHow can the Language Centre help you support students with academic skills development?\n\nPlease click here to book.

SUMMARY:Generative AI for Academic Writing and Assessment: Issues and Opportunities - External Event
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 8th March. 12:00 – 13:00 \nMike Sharples \nNew generative AI systems such as ChatGPT are powerful general-purpose language devices. They can hold conversations\, write plausible student essays\, summarise scientific texts\, produce lesson plans\, and draft academic papers. But they have a serious flaw – they are language models not knowledge bases; they output “continuations” not facts. As such\, they need to be approached with great care. In this talk I show examples of their use and misuse\, discuss the implications for student assessment and plagiarism\, suggest new opportunities for creative writing and argumentation with AI\, and end with some implications for educational development and policy making. Mike Sharples is Emeritus Professor of Educational Technology in the Institute of Educational Technology at The Open University and is the co-author of the book which is a great introduction to this form of software and its development https://www.routledge.com/Story-Machines-How-Computers-Have-Become-Creative-Writers/Sharples-Perez/p/book/9780367751975 \nZoom link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/84984560388?pwd=VklLNnowWWFhKy9IWE9IUW15Ritudz09 \nMeeting ID: 849 8456 0388\nPasscode: 538659 \nFor more information please click here.

SUMMARY:LTExChange Symposium Event - Decolonising Learning and Teaching
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Professor Sally Everett (Kings College London\, UK) as keynote speaker for the second LTExChange Symposium of the year entitled ‘Decolonising Learning and Teaching’ – book your place now! \nDecolonising Learning and Teaching \nIn this keynote talk we will explore issues of power\, privilege\, and pedagogy in our post pandemic learning landscape. Against a background of raging culture wars\, the Black Lives Matter movement\, and ever-increasing awarding gaps for black and minority ethnic student groups\, it has never been more important and more urgent to collectively “consider how our pedagogic practices might positively respond to calls for a more culturally sustaining pedagogy” (Hanesworth\, Bracken\, and Elkington\, 2019). In positively responding to this challenge\, I encourage us all to embrace the opportunity to become less myopic in our perspectives and strive towards practices that aim to liberate our students\, our pedagogies\, and ourselves\, from approaches built on European-centred and western frameworks that have invisibilised subaltern voices and indigenous knowledges. \n  \nAlthough this talk will be underpinned by literature\, its primary focus will be on sharing some practical ways to approach the decolonisation and diversification of our learning and teaching – thereby reframing and reconstructing the way we engage in university education. Challenging an institutional hierarchy and monopoly on knowledge is an incredibly daunting prospect and knowing where to start can lead to fear\, paralysis\, and confusion. Therefore\, I hope the discussion might help Teesside University continue in its development of a powerful and penetrating community of inclusive practice. This talk may mark the start of a journey for some\, and for others\, offer a useful reflection point and some encouragement to continue in their pursuit to overturn and challenge pedagogic tools of exclusion. In sharing ideas and coming together\, we are well positioned to collectively explore how we can sensitively and authentically occupy uncomfortable spaces and foster approaches that promote greater social justice\, and a more truthful view of the world to our students. \nTo book a place on this workshop\, please click here.  \nThis session is for TU staff only.

SUMMARY:Academic Skills and Artificial Intelligence in Education
DESCRIPTION:Friday 28th April 2023\nTeesside University\nMiddlesbrough campus event \nTogether with Turnitin\, Teesside University is hosting an institution-wide event\nbringing together a wide range of academics and practitioners to discuss how we\ncontinue to reimagine the support for the development of students’ academic skills in\nlight of generative AI tools. With the rise of generative AI systems like ChatGPT\, this\nadds another layer of complexity to the issue of academic integrity. These systems\ncan generate humanlike responses to a wide range of prompts\, including essay\nquestions. The question is: If the AI is good enough to produce something that could\nbe a student’s work\, how will we ever really know what is the student’s work and\nwhat was done by a machine? The event will be collaborative and aims to encourage\nconversations around how learning\, knowledge creation\, and assessments practices\ncan be reimaged to support the development of future-readiness in our graduates. \n09:30-09:45 Coffee\, Introductions and context\n09:45-10:15 Academic Skills and Graduate Attributes\n10:15-11:00 Artificial Intelligence in Education\n11:00-11:15 Break/Coffee\n11:15-12:00 Academic Integrity\n12:00-12:45 Top tips on using Feedback Studio: Features and\nFunctionalities including its AI\n12:45-13:00 Close and Next Steps \nThis session is now full.

SUMMARY:Developing Practice in Personal Tutoring: Personal Tutoring Code of Practice
DESCRIPTION:This session will focus around the University’s Personal Tutoring Code of Practice; we will discuss its aims and rationale and the key principles that form the basic underpinning of the Code.  We will explore the key responsibilities of Personal Tutoring at Teesside and the pastoral\, academic and professional/career conversations that take place between tutor and tutee.  Colleagues will be introduced to the Academic Enhancement Framework (AEF) and particularly the ‘Student Success’ strand which incorporates the expectations around personal tutoring and working with data to support success.  Staff will be encouraged to work towards enhancement and excellence in these areas. \nPersonal Tutors should be proactive in their role and focus on improving student performance providing a consistent\, equitable\, structured and data informed approach for all students to pastoral\, general academic and professional support.  Providing general academic support will be focussed around assisting the student achieve their potential (drawing on analytics to facilitate the discussions).  In supporting students around pastoral and professional related issues it may be appropriate to direct them to colleagues across the University who can provide more bespoke support (for example SLS and Student Learning in SLAR). \nThis session is relevant to all new academic colleagues who are Personal Tutors within their Schools and may also be relevant to other academic and support staff who wish to find out more about Personal Tutoring at Teesside University. \nTo book a place on this session please click here.

SUMMARY:LTExChange Symposium Event - Mattering and Belonging in Student Engagement
DESCRIPTION:To book a place please click here.  \nThis event will critically consider what it means to meaningfully engage students and staff in increasingly digital communities of learning. Keynote speaker: Karen Gravett (University of Surrey\, UK). \n‘Mattering and Belonging in and for Student Engagement’ \nOur recent times have upended the way we think about student learning. With the shift online and now to increasingly blended teaching practices\, or following increased concerns about students’ attendance\, educators have focused upon questions relating to students’ engagement and sense of belonging. In this keynote presentation\, I will share some of my recent research and practice examining belonging and student engagement\, enabling participants to think about students’ experiences of higher education in new ways. Specifically\, I consider how we might think about belonging as a process\, thinking about how belonging evolves\, what belonging makes possible\, and why it might be that some students do not wish to belong. I will consider different perspectives on belonging and argue for the value of an approach to teaching that notices the situated\, day-to-day\, practices of students’ learning. I will think about how belonging plays out in the ‘micro moments’ of learning and teaching\, and how relational pedagogies may be helpful in fostering engagement and connection. I also explore the concept of mattering in learning: thinking about who and what matters within these learning moments. This presentation will conclude with exploring practical approaches for supporting students\, as I explore how we can draw upon evidence-based research to assist our work in maximising students’ potential and fostering belonging for a diversity of students in contemporary higher education.
