DESCRIPTION:This session will focus on information for student facing staff who might be presented with a student in distress. The session aims to inform staff about strategies they can use to de-escalate a situation and what questions to ask to find out relevant information to refer appropriately. Boundaries will be explored so that staff feel confident about appropriate actions when managing a potential crisis situation and can identify when specialist intervention is required. SUMMARY:Developing Practice in Personal Tutoring: Personal Tutoring Code of Practice
DESCRIPTION:This session will focus around the University’s Personal Tutoring Code of Practice; we will discuss its aims and rationale and the key principles that form the basic underpinning of the Code.  We will explore the key responsibilities of Personal Tutoring at Teesside and the pastoral\, academic and professional/career conversations that take place between tutor and tutee. \nColleagues will be introduced to the Academic Enhancement Framework (AEF) and particularly the ‘Student Success’ strand which incorporates the expectations around personal tutoring and working with data held within StREAM to support success. Key guidance around handling and recordings of personal and sensitive data under GDPR legislature will also be provided. \nStaff will be encouraged to work towards enhancement and excellence in these areas. \nPersonal Tutors should be proactive in their role and focus on improving student performance providing a consistent\, equitable\, structured and data informed approach for all students to pastoral\, general academic and professional support.  Providing general academic support will be focussed around assisting the student achieve their potential (drawing on analytics to facilitate the discussions).  In supporting students around pastoral and professional related issues it may be appropriate to direct them to colleagues across the University who can provide more bespoke support (for example SLS and Student Learning in SLAR). \nThis session is relevant to all new academic colleagues who are Personal Tutors within their Schools and may also be relevant to other academic and support staff who wish to find out more about Personal Tutoring at Teesside University. \nPlease click here to book.

DESCRIPTION:  \nWorking with compassionate pedagogies for students – and for us: continuing the conversation \nWe are delighted to have Professor Felton (Elon University\, US) returning to facilitate a second (virtual) interactive event on Wednesday January 18th (13:00 – 15:00) that will garner a collective response to questions generating during the LTExChange Symposium Event on November 30th with focus on practical steps we can take on our own and with our colleagues to create a more relational\, compassionate university. \nTaken together\, this two-part interactive series offers a timely exploration of how we can make our work – and our institutions – more relational and compassionate. \nProfessor Peter Felton delivered the first symposium event of the year on November 30th with a focus on the theme of ‘The Compassionate Curriculum’. \nWe invite colleagues to review the recording of Professor Felton’s talk and consider the three questions posed (see above) ahead of attending the second interactive event on January 18th. \nIn this interactive talk Professor Felton discussed his respected international work in relationship-rich education in a wide-ranging exposition of relational approaches to pedagogic practice and learning design in higher education. \nBuilding on his review of this shifting landscape for student learning\, Professor Felton posed several key questions: \n\nWhat do you do to cultivate educational relationships with/among your students?\n\n\nWhat are significant barriers to developing these relationships?\n\n\nWhat do you do to develop relationships that support your professional thriving?\n\nProfessor Felton will be facilitating discussions in response to these questions as we continue to consider what compassionate pedagogy means for us both now and in the future. \nBook your place on the event here.

SUMMARY:Generative AI for Academic Writing and Assessment: Issues and Opportunities - External Event
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 8th March. 12:00 – 13:00 \nMike Sharples \nNew generative AI systems such as ChatGPT are powerful general-purpose language devices. They can hold conversations\, write plausible student essays\, summarise scientific texts\, produce lesson plans\, and draft academic papers. But they have a serious flaw – they are language models not knowledge bases; they output “continuations” not facts. As such\, they need to be approached with great care. In this talk I show examples of their use and misuse\, discuss the implications for student assessment and plagiarism\, suggest new opportunities for creative writing and argumentation with AI\, and end with some implications for educational development and policy making. SLAR will be hosting a series of monthly institution-wide sessions on StREAM aimed at teaching staff to will help you understand the platform and the affordances of learner analytics for timely student support. SUMMARY:LTExChange Symposium Event - Decolonising Learning and Teaching
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Professor Sally Everett (Kings College London\, UK) as keynote speaker for the second LTExChange Symposium of the year entitled ‘Decolonising Learning and Teaching’ – book your place now! \nDecolonising Learning and Teaching \nIn this keynote talk we will explore issues of power\, privilege\, and pedagogy in our post pandemic learning landscape. Against a background of raging culture wars\, the Black Lives Matter movement\, and ever-increasing awarding gaps for black and minority ethnic student groups\, it has never been more important and more urgent to collectively “consider how our pedagogic practices might positively respond to calls for a more culturally sustaining pedagogy” (Hanesworth\, Bracken\, and Elkington\, 2019). In positively responding to this challenge\, I encourage us all to embrace the opportunity to become less myopic in our perspectives and strive towards practices that aim to liberate our students\, our pedagogies\, and ourselves\, from approaches built on European-centred and western frameworks that have invisibilised subaltern voices and indigenous knowledges. \n  \nAlthough this talk will be underpinned by literature\, its primary focus will be on sharing some practical ways to approach the decolonisation and diversification of our learning and teaching – thereby reframing and reconstructing the way we engage in university education. Challenging an institutional hierarchy and monopoly on knowledge is an incredibly daunting prospect and knowing where to start can lead to fear\, paralysis\, and confusion. Therefore\, I hope the discussion might help Teesside University continue in its development of a powerful and penetrating community of inclusive practice. This talk may mark the start of a journey for some\, and for others\, offer a useful reflection point and some encouragement to continue in their pursuit to overturn and challenge pedagogic tools of exclusion.
