Week 3 – Personal Reflection

Week 3 – The importance of Personal Reflection

For week 3,  we focused on personal reflection. Which is a concept that holds immense importance in both personal and professional growth. The topic helped to understand and shape our identities, careers, and life paths.

I constructed a personal SWOT framework. This stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. It is a powerful tool for self-assessment and strategic planning. It encourages a balanced view of ourselves and considers both internal and external factors that impact personal and professional growth (Hill & Westbrook, 1997). By identifying strengths, I acknowledged the areas where I excel, while recognising weaknesses allowed me to pinpoint areas for development.

The SWOT Analysis

Evaluation using Gibbs Reflective Framework

Description: The SWOT analysis is a strategic tool that helps in setting achievable goals and developing strategies to achieve them. By identifying strengths, it highlights what can be leveraged or built upon. Recognising weaknesses allows for the development of plans to address or change them. Understanding opportunities and threats helps in adapting or preparing for external changes. This strategic approach is critical for long-term success and adaptability.

Feelings – Reflecting on my strengths provides me with a sense of pride and confidence. It’s reassuring to recognise the areas where I excel. However, acknowledging my weaknesses is a humbling experience; it brings a certain level of discomfort but also a realisation of the areas I need to work on. The opportunities in my field are sources of excitement and motivation, presenting pathways for growth and learning. In contrast, the threats I face, while daunting, also offer a realistic perspective on the challenges in my industry.

Evaluation- This stage involves critically assessing the impact of these strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats on my professional life. As Boud, Keogh, and Walker (1985) suggest, reflection turns experience into learning. My strengths have undoubtedly paved the way for my current achievements, while my weaknesses highlight the areas where I need improvement. The opportunities present a roadmap for my career advancement, but the threats remind me of the inevitable challenges and the need for continuous learning and adaptation.

Analysis – In analysing these aspects, I realise the interconnectedness of my strengths and weaknesses with the opportunities and threats in my career field. As Schön (1983) explains, the reflective practitioner learns from their experiences. My fear of public speaking, for instance, is an area where professional training could be beneficial. Similarly, my strength in networking could be leveraged to limit the threat of competition and keep note of technological advancements.

Conclusion – Reflecting on this SWOT analysis leads me to the conclusion that while I have a strong foundation of skills and attributes, there is a clear need for continuous personal and professional development. This reflection aligns with Moon’s (1999) assertion that reflection is a crucial part of learning and development.

Action Plan – Going forward, I plan to focus on improving my public speaking skills, by becoming frequent in group discussions in my fashion lectures. I also aim to manage my tendency to overcommit by setting more realistic goals and deadlines. To counteract the threats, I will actively seek opportunities for professional development, particularly in emerging technologies and market trends.

Week 2 Personal Development Plan

Week 2 – Personal Development Plan

In our second week, we focused on developing a personal development plan, centered around a five-year career plan and the creation of a vision board to visually represent this journey. This exercise proved to be immensely beneficial, as it allowed me to introspectively identify the aspects of my life that truly resonate with me. The process of outlining a five-year plan also brought to light potential challenges and necessary steps I need to implement to turn this vision into reality.

The Vision Board:

My vision board is a vivid collage of my aspirations which features significant milestones and dreams. It includes my graduation which is hopefully the gateway to future opportunities. A focus on career development in the accounting industry which reflects my commitment to professional growth and financial expertise. The image of my dream car represents not just a symbol of success, but also the freedom and mobility I value. I have showcased a move to the city as I hope this could mean greater opportunities. The self-made quote on the board serves as a daily source of inspiration and a reminder of my core values. I have also displayed my business logo as a representation of entrepreneurial ambition. Lastly, images of catwalk shows are to show my journey in modelling. It illustrates both my passion for fashion and my dedication to personal expression and confidence. Each element on this board is a crucial part of my life’s ambitions.

  4. Analysis: In creating the vision board, I realized the importance of various life goals, like graduating, advancing in the accounting industry, and pursuing my modelling interests. Week 1 – Evaluating and researching our garments

Week 1 – Evaluating and researching our garments

This week, we conducted a thorough evaluation of the clothes in our wardrobes by looking into how sustainable our garments are.  This in-depth analysis has equipped me with the knowledge to make more informed and eco-friendly choices.

Garment #1 – Cropped faux leather jacket

100% polyester, 100% polyurethane

Clothing description : Jacket featuring a lapel collar and long sleeves. False welt pocket on the chest. Matching lining. Front metal zip fastening

Country of origin: Made in Myanmar/Burma

Potential Impacts of Polyester

  • Polyester production involves the extraction of crude oil and natural gas, which are non-renewable resources and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. The manufacturing process also consumes water and energy, leading to water pollution and carbon emissions
  • When disposed of in landfills, polyester does not readily biodegrade, contributing to landfill waste and potential leaching of chemicals into the soil.

Garment #2 Black, white and red ferrari jacket

Made with 65% polyester & 35% Cotton

Product Description – Crafted from high-quality materials, this jacket features a sleek black, white, and red color scheme that is sure to turn heads. The embroidered Ferrari logo on the front and back adds an extra touch to this already stunning piece.

Country of Origin: Thailand

Potential Impacts of Cotton

  • Cotton cultivation is highly water-intensive. It requires a substantial amount of water, and in regions with limited water resources, excessive irrigation for cotton farming can lead to water scarcity and the depletion of freshwater ecosystems.
  • The dyeing and finishing processes used in textile manufacturing can result in the discharge of chemicals and dyes into water bodies if not properly managed, contributing to water pollution and ecosystem damage.

To Summarise

The evaluation of my wardrobe has prompted a significant shift in my perspective towards fashion choices. Given the considerable textile waste generated by the fashion industry, I am now more conscious of the materials and quality of the garments I purchase. This reflection has steered me towards making more responsible and sustainable fashion decisions.
