Pre-Course Reading

This page is designed to give you the absolute essentials that you should familiarise yourself with prior to starting the course. Take time to explore as much content as you can to give yourself the best possible start!

Pre-Course Reading

Keeping Children Safe in Education – Part 1 (2024) and What to do if you are worried about a child… (2015) are government safeguarding guidance. Whilst we will talk about safeguarding as part of your course and it will be a key element of your placement experiences, it is important that you have an understanding of what safeguarding is and what to do if you have any concerns.

The next two documents are key to your success in training as a teacher into the Early Career Framework. These are the Initial Teacher Training and Early Career Framework (ITTECF) and The Teacher’s Standards:

Finally, you should familiarise yourself with the National Curriculum (2014). Focus on the age range and subject(s) you are training to teach. For example, if you are training for Primary, you will need to look at all subjects for Key Stages One and Two. For Secondary, read around the programmes of study for your subject(s) for Key Stages Three and Four.
