You might even have seen snippets yourself or read about it in the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tees.ac.uk\/sections\/news\/pressreleases_story.cfm?story_id=7712&amp;this_issue_title=October%202021&amp;this_issue=341\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teesside University press release<\/a>. And so, we thought it\u2019d be nice to give a little behind-the-scenes of this amazing opportunity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">How does 3D scanning actually work? Well, there are lots of different types of 3D scanners, all with their own applications and uses. For this exhibit, we used a structured light scanner (SLS), which works by projecting a tightly calibrated set of patterns onto an object. The pattern changes shape as it falls onto an object, resulting in 3D measurements. Now another 40 to go&#8230;\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">How can we use this in our work with Vindolanda? As you may have noticed in some of our previous blog posts, we\u2019re big fans of 3D here, including <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/tuba\/2019\/09\/06\/digitising-vindolanda-workshop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">animal and human heads on pikes,<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/tuba\/2019\/08\/05\/all-aboard-next-stop-digital-land\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Locomotion.<\/a>\u00a0We\u2019ve even published on 3<a href=\"https:\/\/traj.openlibhums.org\/article\/id\/4005\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">D scanning of ox crania used in target practice<\/a>, and have some further outputs on their way. The key outcome from 3D scanning for the museum environment is\u00a0<strong>access<\/strong>. How often have you visited a museum and though &#8220;hey, that\u2019s a pretty cool object, I wanna look closer&#8221;? 3D scanning provides a digital model of the object that you can freely zoom in and out or rotate around, which is.. well, pretty neat! However, we can then run some bespoke processes to make these\u00a0<em>3D printable<\/em>. That\u2019s right &#8211; you can properly get hands-on with highly accurate replicas of delicate and fragile museum objects!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">So where does this lead us? Well, over the years, we\u2019ve been partaking in several exhibits on the 3D scanning, chemical and microbial work we\u2019ve been undertaking at Vindolanda. Following the success of these, we were invited to Vindolanda over the summer to explore the suitability of 3D scanning a wide range of wooden objects. Here, you can find more information, videos and commentary on each object plus the 3D models. Some of these are incredibly rare, such as the only conserved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vindolanda.com\/toilet-seat\">wooden toilet seat<\/a> in Britain, the cherry wood <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vindolanda.com\/saddle-sore-to-saddle-success\">saddle stiffener<\/a>, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vindolanda.com\/trowel\">wooden trowel<\/a> with mortar still stuck to it!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1585\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1585\" style=\"width: 747px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/williamsrhy\/collections\/digging-up-memories-making-connections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1585\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/environment\/files\/2021\/10\/DiggingMemoriesSketch-1024x466.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"747\" height=\"340\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1585\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Just a few of the wooden objects available. Click the image to view them all!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">We do have a couple personal favourite objects, of course. The wooden <a href=\"https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/3d-models\/roman-toy-sword-d1a87a26c87446e78aa0b9eccc194543\">toy sword<\/a> is an excellent artefact because it really demonstrates that the military took their families with them to Vindolanda, rather than the typical focus on conflict and fighting. The <a href=\"https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/3d-models\/roman-pepper-pot-56b8612a8619477687d8b353de17d0eb\">pepper pot<\/a> is also great because of <em>how well<\/em> the 3D scanning came out &#8211; we had anticipated this to be poor because it\u2019s a very cylindrical object that normally doesn\u2019t facilitate 3D scanning but there was just enough of an irregular morphology to stitch together and texture <em>beautifully<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vindolanda.com\/workbench\">Atto\u2019s Workbench<\/a> is also a fantastic object but the sheer size and lack of thickness meant it took more scans and time than any other object we\u2019ve scanned in order to fully capture and register together. We cannot recommend this enough; this evokes such a different set of emotions and leaves an experience that lingers for a long time. Who knew that something as banal as opening and closing a pepper pot lid could be so captivating!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">How did all of this come about? Purely thanks to so many people involved, coming together for this collaborative effort, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vindolanda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vindolanda Trust<\/a> and Dr Anneke Hackenbroich driving this project forward.
