My development and methodology 02

The full shot of the low angle character, the light shines out of the tunnel, the character body is very dark to make him look very ominous. And the character looks at the tunnel, indicating that there is something strange in the tunnel. The camera is close to the character and facing the tunnel, and you can clearly see a package on the ground. In the camera, only the lower body of the character, the character has a large area of shadow, so that the audience’s attention on the package. The lens then switches between the package and the character’s face.A low-angle close-up of the character’s face, and a visible shadow on the character’s face, cannot see the character’s entire face. This indicates that the character will be in danger.

My development and methodology 01

According to my research, I drew the following shots and lights to simulate the effects of horror movies.

A low angle lens of the house, the character is back to the camera to look at the house, so that the audience think the house is very ominous. The character’s low angle medium close-up lens, the light is back light, has a large area of shadow on the body, almost can not see the face clearly. Then there is the character’s facial expression close-up shot, his expression panicked, there is a strong light on the character’s face and create a clear shadow, indicating that the character will be in danger.A full shot of the door, which indicates that the character is curious behind the door. The character’s hand close-up is opening the door, and this is where the horror will begin.

Death Bell analysis

<Death Bell> lens and light analysis

Death Bell  is a 2008 South Korean  horror film directed by Yoon Hong-seung.

(all of the following pictures are from screenshots of the film)

It is a low angle lens of a character’s face close-up. As she wipes off the dust with her hands, her face gradually appears and her eyes become clearer. Then a ghost caught her by the foot. The lens switches very fast here.A close-up of the ghost’s hand and a lens of the character panicking and running away. It fully shows the great tension and fear of the role.

In this exam scene, there are many high-angle shots of the test paper and the students’ medium close-up shots. The camera’s angles kept switching, creating a tense atmosphere. When a male character looks up, it’s a very high angle lens and the lens is spinning. When the camera approached the test paper on the table, a ghost face appeared on the test paper.

A God’s eye shot is the character being dragged out of the door. The character is on the right side of the lens, and in the middle of the lens is a pool of blood on the ground. This means that the character is bound to disappear from the camera and that he cannot escape.

Two high-angle shots from different angles show that students are very frightened when they see scary videos on TV.

A group of medium close up shots is a character struggling in a glass tank filled with water. Then there was a full shot of a dead fish in the water, which seemed calm but sad.And at this time the character’s situation is like this dead fish, it’s painful. The overall light is the top light, you can see a clearer shadow in the character.Because of the moisture of the reason can not see the role clearly, let the audience worry about her.

This part has been in the film for a long time. The angle of the camera keeps moving up and down, there are a lot of high angle and low angle lens, and the camera moves between different characters at the same time. There are also a lot of Dutch tilt lenses, and the camera is swinging. All this means that everyone is panicked and scared, and there will be a lot of bad things going on.

The lens switches between the character and the door, which indicates danger behind the door. The whole light is very dark and the light is illuminated from the back of the character, and we can’t see their faces. This makes them look very ominous. They will encounter terrible things.

This part of the characters are very nervous, the main source of light is the top light. In the film, the lights twinkle here for a long time, which makes the audience feel dizzy and busy as well as the characters. It’s good to make a sense of tension  and speeds up the rhythm of the film.

This is a full shot of the character trapped in the washing machine. There is little light in the washing machine, and the character is in a black circle throughout the lens. This heralds that the character will be swallowed up by the washing machine.

It’s a close-up shot of the character’s face, and his expression is very scared. The whole light is only the flashlight in the character’s hand, surrounded by dark, can only see the character and the wall in front of him. He was very afraid of what was behind the wall.

First of all, the medium shot of the character, the light is very dark, only the flashlight in the character’s hand has light, can not see the character clearly. Then there are two high-angle lenses from different angles, the whole corridor is very narrow and dark, and the high-angle lens is very depressing.Add a close-up view of the character and a full shot of the door to indicate that the character wants to know what’s going on behind the door. When the character opens the door, it is also a very high angle lens, it makes the character look ominous, there must be something scary behind the door.

The whole film has a very fast rhythm and can quickly attract the attention of the audience. There are a lot of lens switching quickly, a lot of high angle and low angle lens, and many times the lens will keep spinning. In terms of lighting, there are a lot of lights flashing, a lot of times it’s dark around, there’s only a little light, and there’s a lot of back lights. All this accelerates the rhythm of the film, gives the audience a sense of tension and panic, and greatly enhances the atmosphere of terror.

The Doll Master analysis

<The Doll Master> lens and light analysis

The Doll Master is a 2004 South Korean horror film directed by Jeong Yong-ki.

(all of the following pictures are from screenshots of the film)

The close-up of the face of the character hiding in the wardrobe, the shadow of the shutters of the wardrobe reflected on the character’s face, is very dark around, which indicates that the character is surrounded by danger and is in a dilemma.Suddenly he felt something moving behind him, a doll in the wardrobe, and the shadow of the wardrobe was also reflected on the doll’s face. There was no shadow in her eyes and there was a strong light in her eyes. This succeeded in attracting the audience’s attention to the doll’s eyes, and the doll’s eyes moved. This makes the audience feel incredible and scared, adding to the film’s mysterious and scary atmosphere.

First, the character’s face was a close-up, and she woke up in the bed, and the lens switched between her face and the door, indicating the danger of being close and the hair after the door. When the character sits up from bed, there is little light on her body, only a faint light behind her, which gives a sense of uneasiness that there may be danger behind the character. When the character faces the window, the character has a soft light on her face, but there is nothing outside the window. The close-up of one hand was that she wanted to know what was out of the window, but then a doll’s head close-up was her doll falling to the ground, and when she picked it up, there were ghost hands and hair outside the window. But she was safe, and it could be said that her doll saved her life. But when she went back to bed, it was a high-angle shot indicating that she would be in danger again. The lamp next to it suddenly turned off, and then the top light in the room began to twinkle. The horror doll on the flashing lamp attracted the attention of the audience and was a low-angle lens, indicating that the doll was threatening. The next second, a ghost suddenly appeared in front of the character, and she was doomed not to escape.

A set of face close up shots. The character’s eyes look to the upper right, and the lens moves to the upper right, with a scary doll behind him. When she was about to get up, it’s a close-up shot of a hand, the doll caught her.She was very frightened, because the doll was moving. Then the doll’s hand moved to the character’s face and touched the character’s face. The camera moves to the side of the character, and the character’s mouth is covered by the doll.A medium close-up shot is the doll breaking the character’s neck in the mirror. The light on the face of the character was not strong at the beginning, and when the doll caught her, the light on her face became strong, the face had a deep shadow, and the audience could not even see the right face of the character. This means that the characters become more afraid and more dangerous.

In the film, the character’s face often has a very deep shadow, and the overall light is very dark. Most of this is an evil character. The first male character’s face, the shadow is very clear on the eyes, the mouth and the cheek, and the dark background is integrated. There is a strong light outside the shadow, which makes the character’s face contrast strong,so that the audience can not see his features, reflecting the character’s inner gloom and cruelty. The second female character’s face has a very large shadow, and only a few parts of the face can be seen, represents the evil and cunning of the character. The two men’s clothes are black, which makes them darker under dark light.

In this part, the scene is very dark and completely free of light. But the hands of the characters and the faces and hands of the dolls, the audience can see very clearly, there is a strong light on them, and there are some filled light. This allows the audience to see the key content clearly and easily.

In this part, the camera keeps spinning around the roof and the character’s head, indicating that the character is very alarmed. And is a low-angle lens when the roof is taken, it reflects the panic and confusion of the character.

In this film, the overall scene of the light is dark, but there are often some strong light on the character, will produce a lot of shadow on the character. In terms of lens, there are some rotating lenses, the rhythm of the lens can successfully guide the audience.A good atmosphere of terror, and a good  described the story of the revenge of the doll.

Bunshinsaba Analysis

<Bunshinsaba> lens and light analysis

Bunshinsaba  is a 2004 South Korean horror film directed by Ahn Byeong-ki.

(all of the following pictures are from screenshots of the film)

At the beginning of the film, the characters summon the Bunshinsaba, and a God’s eye shot revolves around the hands on the table, heralding a series of terrible things to begin here.

The light turned red, a close-up shot of hands, there is an extra hand on the table. Then there is a close-up of the character’s face, the camera moves from left to right and then moves back to the left, and a scary face appears behind the character. This method of guiding the audience through the movement of the lens and making the audience feel terrible appears in the film many times.

A high angle lens, and as the character approaches, the higher the angle of the lens, which means that the character is gradually moving into danger.

A medium shot is the back of the character, and the camera is gradually approaching the character and moving slowly down. The shadow of one hand appeared on the character, and then the other hand grabbed the character’s ankle.

In the close-up of the hand, the character feels a little strange about the bag. When she opens the bag, it is a low-angle lens, and the character’s face is surrounded by a black bag, which indicates that the character will be trapped and unable to escape. Then there was a ghost in the bag who grabbed the character’s foot and made it impossible for her to move. Then there was a close-up of the character’s face, and she was very frightened, and the light on her face became strong and hot.Because she’ll be killed by an oncoming vehicle.

In this paragraph, the camera switches between the girl in bed and the mother next to it.A close-up of the daughter’s eyes, her eyes become the eyes of a ghost. When the mother looked at the mirror, the daughter’s eyes in the mirror were normal but immediately turned into ghost eyes. When she turned to her daughter again, her eyes were normal. Then there was a close-up of her face on the left side of the camera, and there was an extra body behind her.The focus of the camera is on the daughter in the mirror, who does the same thing as the ghost in front of her.Mother was very frightened, a very high angle of the camera is mother’s face next to two ghosts are approaching.A close-up of an eye is that mother’s two eyes are strongly separated and she has been manipulated by ghosts.

In this part, the audience and the role of mother feel nervous and scared through the mirror. The light is not strong in the room, but it is strong in the character and has a clear shadow. And the character’s clothes are black and white, making the light look stronger.

This is a wide shot, the character in the center of the lens back to the camera. She was in the crack of the door, and the light shone out of it.This means that the character’s life is oppressed and that she can’t escape from a bad life.

A wide shot in which the camera moves from the right to the left in front of the character, then the camera moves from the right to the left again behind the character, and then the camera comes to the front of the character again.A close-up of the character’s face, she turned her head back, the camera moved upward and slowly focused on the statue behind the character, and there was no ghost as expected. However, when the character looked back, a ghost suddenly appeared in the opposite chair, and the red light next to it began to twinkle. This scared the audience, first let the audience think that ghosts will appear behind the character, when the audience relaxed their vigilance, the ghost suddenly appeared in front of the character. And the red light is very similar to the first ghost at the beginning.

The red lights keep flashing and a series of close-up lenses.A close-up of the hand, the character found an extra pair of hands, the next second she was clasped by her neck by those hands. Then there was a close-up of the character’s face, and she was so scared that she wanted to break free, and she looked up.The camera switches between the close-up of the ghost’s face and the close-up of the character’s foot, and the lens of the character’s foot is a Dutch tilt lens, which indicates that the character is very flustered. The following close-up is the face of a ghost from the perspective of the character, an inverted face and a very scary expression. It added to the horror atmosphere of the film.

A high angle lens is that many people in the school are walking around, giving people an ominous feeling, and the color of the whole light is red.And this is the ghost’s perspective, which shows that the ghost wants to kill everyone, everything is in her hands.

The full shot is the character’s back slowly out of the door. The light flashed and darkened in the strong lightning. As the character walks out, the light gets darker and darker until it ends up completely dark.In this part, the audience can not see at all what is outside the door, feeling that the character is heading for the unknown and dying.

In the whole film, the light is sometimes very strong, and there are a lot of red, green and yellow light, which makes the atmosphere of the whole film mysterious. In terms of lens, there are many high-angle lenses give people a sense of insecurity. The switching of many close-up lenses increases the tension of the film. The camera often moves horizontally to create suspense.

Killer Toon analysis 02

<Killer Toon> lens and light analysis 02

Killer Toon  is a 2013 South Korean satirical psychological horror film directed by Kim Yong-gyun.

(all of the following pictures are from screenshots of the film)

A close-up shot is the waist of the character on the right half of the lens, protruding the corpses behind it.When the character turned around, the direction of the  changed, the close-up shot switched to the body’s face close-up, and the corpses opened its eyes, followed by the character’s face close-up, and he panicked.Through the conversion of the camera, the audience clearly felt the atmosphere of terror.

\

The overall light turned yellow, indicating that the character entered the memory. Then the light becomes cold and dim, this is the character in the memory of the memory, the color of light gives people a cold feeling, this is the character’s painful memory. And when the female character lies on the ground is a high angle lens, reflects her helplessness caused by illness. When he went back to the last layer of memory, the lights were no longer yellow but very cold, the light shines from the left rear of the character and shows a large area of shadow on the character’s face, showing the ferocious nature of the character.

Two different angles of the Dutch tilt lens, through the lens skew reflects the character’s fear. The light in the right rear makes the character look restless.

A God’s eye shot, the lens is relatively close to the character, giving a sense of oppression, a good embodiment of the character trapped here sense of helplessness. The 90-degree tilt of the corpse freezer shed blood, giving a sense of insecurity, and the red light on the character’s face made him more restless.

The character of the full shot looks at the freezer of the corpse, and the lights are bright and dim, which makes the rhythm of the film faster. When the lights are on, the freezer opens itself, and the character is very scared. The red light reflected on the freezer also added to the strange atmosphere.

When the camera is on the front of the character, the light shines from the left rear, and when the camera moves to the rear of the character, the light also moves in the opposite direction, making the hand extending into the freezer in sharp contrast to the dark freezer. When the camera returns to the front of the character again, the camera begins to move quickly towards the character, increasing the sense of tension and terror.

The angle of the lens can show the relationship between the two characters, a low-angle male character lens and a high-angle female character lens show that the male role is dominant, he kidnaps the female character, and the female character is weak and helpless.

The light flickered, the lens constantly switched between the warehouse full shot and the character’s face close-up lens, and a pair of shoes appeared in the process of flashing the light, followed by the little girl, and the character was very frightened. As a result of the change in lighting, the character’s face and warehouse scenes have been changing, making the film atmosphere tense.

A close-up is a ghost’s hand holding the character’s hand, the lens pushes to the right, only sees the character’s frightened face, and has the intense light to shine from the right, indicating that the character hopes the person opposite can save him. The camera moved to the left again, turning into a close-up of the ghost’s hand, followed by the face of the little girl. This shot is a good reflection of the character’s fear and inability to break free.

Killer Toon analysis 01

<Killer Toon> lens and light analysis 01

Killer Toon  is a 2013 South Korean satirical psychological horror film directed by Kim Yong-gyun.

(all of the following pictures are from screenshots of the film)

The film begins with a close-up of a pen pierced into a finger, with blood dripping on the drawing paper and the character signing with blood. The face of the character is illuminated, the color of the light is very cold, and the expression of the character is focused. It reflects the cartoon works are very important to the heroine and reflects the horror atmosphere of the film.

This is a scene in which the character is running away. First, a medium close up lens of the character’s back, then the camera moves in front of the character and becomes a close-up lens of the character’s face. The camera moves faster than the character, which fully reflects the character’s fear and panic, and is inescapable. At the same time, the lights are bright and dim, which increases the horror atmosphere of the film.

First of all, the character half-face is the close up lens, the large part of the area is the scene behind the character. The focus of the lens is shifted from the character’s face to the scene behind the character, and the light is concentrated on a distant person’s shadow, and the attention of the audience is attracted to the person in the distance. Then it’s a low-angle shot, from the bottom of the car to the character’s foot to the medium close up lens of the heroine’s hand. This makes the audience feel the danger of approaching the character’s hand from the ground. The dead body’s hand caught the heroine’s hand, and made the audience feel enough of the panic, and set the way for the back story.

The light shines from the right rear of the character, and as the character turns its head, the light on the face gets stronger and stronger, in sharp contrast to the dark background. And the character is a look of panic, and when she looked behind the car, she made the audience think he saw something terrible. Then there is a full shot of the empty seat in the back of the car, which is converted to a close-up shot of the front face of the character.Very soft and faint light makes the whole shot look dark, reflecting the atmosphere of unknown and mysterious. When a ghost appears in the back, it is a very strong positive light, the heroine is very frightened expression close-up, adding to the atmosphere of terror. When the light outside the car brightens, the light on the character’s face softened, indicating that the character is coming back to the reality.

This is a clip of a dream in a dream.A high-angle medium-close shot is when the character wakes up and lies in the water, followed by a low-angle shot looking up from the water to make the audience feel an unpeaceful atmosphere. When the character wakes up again after being scared by a ghost, a shot from the god’s eye shot shows the character lying bleeding in the water, looking calm but weird. Then she saw the same ghost again, woke up for the third time, and came back to reality. The light in this section does not change much,it’s all the sun outside the afternoon window, it looks comfortable, but it’s disturbing in the character’s weird dreams.Instead of expressing different dreams through the change of light, the audience feels the panic and uneasiness of the character through the switching of the lens.

Comparative Analysis

A comparative analysis of A Tale of Two Sisters and the Uninvited‘s lens and lights.

A Tale of Two Sisters  is a 2003 South Korean psychological horror drama film written and directed by Kim Jee-woon .

The Uninvited is a 2009 American psychological horror film directed by the Guard Brothers. It is a remake of the 2003 South Korean horror film A Tale of Two Sisters.

(all of the following pictures are from screenshots of the film)

The two films have many similar scenes, but there are also many differences.

The same thing is that the character sees the ghost’s hand on the bed, and the two versions of the camera are very similar. There are close-up of the character’s facial panic expression and the close-up of the door,it means something coming in behind the door, and the character gradually frightened, the ghost gradually approached and caught the quilt on the character. The US version is dimmer overall, and the Korean version is softer.

In this part of ghosts seen under the kitchen cupboard,Both films switch between the character’s face close-up and the ground, and the angle of the lens is also high and low.In the Korean version, the light is very bright, the contrast between light and dark is not big, while in the American version, the overall light is dark and the contrast between light and dark is large.

This part of the two films is very similar, both high-angle shot heroine, reflecting her fear and helplessness. The best part is that the ghost’s leg is at the front of the low-angle lens, and the heroine looks up between her legs. And the light is suddenly warming from the cold color, indicating that the heroine has returned to reality.

The scene of the sisters sitting by the water is very similar, but the Korean version of the camera is longer, showing a quiet and peaceful atmosphere, while the American version of the lens is shorter, faster conversion, showing a tense atmosphere.

In general, the two films have many similarities, but there are also many differences. The overall rhythm of the Korean version is slow, showing a quiet and peaceful atmosphere, and there are a lot of long lenses. The American version has a fast overall rhythm, a lot of short shots switching continuously, the atmosphere is more tense, and the American version has

more ghost lenses, and a lot of ghost facial close-up shots. In terms of lighting, the Korean version of the light is softer, and most of the American version of the light has a strong contrast. For example, when the heroine sees her mother become a ghost, it is a contrast to the strong lightning light. You can also see the different styles from the beginning of the film. The Korean version is a very quiet hospital scene, while the American version is where the heroine suddenly wants to go home at the party, which also reflects the quiet peace of the Korean version and the fast rhythm and tension of the American version.

The Uninvited analysis 02

The Uninvited lens and light analysis 02

The Uninvited is a 2009 American psychological horror film directed by the Guard Brothers. It is a remake of the 2003 South Korean horror film A Tale of Two Sisters.

(all of the following pictures are from screenshots of the film)

A close-up of the character’s face and a full shot of the ghost that the mother turned into, the heroine’s expression is getting more and more scared and the ghost is getting closer and closer, and the ghost is gradually changing from full shot to close-up.When the character looks up on the ground, the front of the camera is the ghost’s leg, which is very depressing and shows that the heroine is very weak and helpless. Then, the angle of the lens gradually increases, from the character’s face close-up to the wide shot, the character in the dark room is very small fear and helplessness.

The light in the room was very dark, which increased the atmosphere of terror because of the twinkling of lightning. When a high-angle wide shot lens is a character sitting on the ground, the light changes from cold to warm, indicating that the character is beginning to return to reality.

In a close-up scene, the sisters stood in front of the window looking at the opposite house, reflecting the reflection of the house on the glass. The sisters’ expressions were very dark, indicating that the opposite house had ulterior secrets. There is no light in the room, only the sisters have light, can only see the reflection of the house and sisters, separated from the background, a good focus, but also increased the atmosphere of terror.

This is a dream in a dream scene. The first is a medium scene with three strange children looking back, one of whom is a ghost in a garbage bag at the beginning of the film, light is the natural light outside the window during the day, and the children are back light, their faces are dark, and they look even scarier. Then there was a close-up of a glass of milk broken to the ground and turned into blood, adding to the strange atmosphere of the film. Then the camera suddenly switched to a close-up of the heroine waking up in bed at night. The light in the room was very dark, and she saw her boyfriend in panic.A middle scene is the back of a male character and the spine bends strangely, and the heroine is afraid to leave the room through the door. The camera drew closer and the lights brightened and warmed. By the time she opened the door again, the room was already a daytime scene, and she returned to reality.

The The fire on the stove and the oil in the pot with an overlooking angle plus the red meat on the table are a series of close-up scenes of cooking, indicating that the stepmother who cooks will be in danger as much as the meat on the table.

The close-up lens constantly switches between a bag and the cutlery placed by the stepmother. The heroine approached the bag and found evidence to expose her stepmother. The close-up is a switch between the hand movements of stepmother and heroine, reflecting the atmosphere of tension and the relationship between the two people are competitive and antagonistic.

A low angle full shot, in front of the camera is a trash can, the heroine is looking at the trash can, which will make the audience feel something different in the trash can. Then there was a high-angle trash can close-up, which was nothing different. Then the lens turns from a low angle full shot  to a close up shot of the character’s face, she looked at the garbage bag in horror because she felt something wrong with the bag.A full shot of a high angle garbage bag makes people feel uncomfortable. This section of the camera’s angle up-and-down transition makes the movie look more nervous and mysterious. The close-up lens switches between the character’s face and under the cupboard until a ghost appears under the cupboard.

The Uninvited analysis 01

The Uninvited lens and light analysis 01

The Uninvited is a 2009 American psychological horror film directed by the Guard Brothers. It is a remake of the 2003 South Korean horror film A Tale of Two Sisters.

(all of the following pictures are from screenshots of the film)

At the beginning of the film, there is tension, a high-angle close-up is a garbage bag, the heroine standing in front of the garbage bag, heralding something special in the garbage bag.The camera moves back and forth between the character’s face close-up and the garbage bag close-up, and the character is getting closer to the garbage bag.The overall light is very dark, because it is the forest scene at night, there is soft light from the side of the character, and there is light behind the character, which indicates that it is not peaceful. The ghost light in the garbage is relatively strong, which contrasts with the dark background.

A high angle shot is a house in the dark, indicating that something bad will happen in the house, and that the character is close to the house, close to danger.

A medium view lens is a character looking at the front, a strong positive light, and a door scene lens, into a stronger light on the door, protruding the door and heralding danger inside the door. The close-up of the keyhole and the outflow of blood pave the way for the heroine to see her father and lover together in the keyhole. She could not accept the fact that the camera began to switch over, the candle was broken, the stove fire, and the close-up of the kettle indicated that the actress’s heart began to collapse. As a result of the flame, the light changed from cold to warm on the character’s face, and the character’s face panicked and scared. The wide view of the fire in the house was high angle, indicating that it was very unfortunate and left a wound in the heroine’s heart.

A full shot and back light, the character is very dark, followed by the heroine’s medium shot, facial expression awkward. It means that in the heroine’s heart, the stepmother is very dark, the relationship between the two is not good and hostile.

A full shot lens of the attic, no extra light, only a light bulb, the whole scene is very dark, highlighting the mystery of the scene.

The medium shot, in the dark bedroom, the character wakes up in bed and looks at the door, followed by a close-up door that opens slowly, indicating danger behind the door. The close-up shot of the bell on the table heralds the unease that the danger may have something to do with the mother. Scary medium close-ups and close-ups of the character’s face indicate that something scary is approaching the character, followed by a close-up ghost’s hand grabbing the quilt, creating a tense and terrifying atmosphere. The overall light is very weak, but the objects in the scene are basically light-colored, such as the door, the clock on the table and the clothes of the character, reflecting some light that improves the brightness of the scene.
