Big Brother – The omnipresence of the government. A fictional leader who is personified and idolised by the Oceanic population.
Bellyfeel – Full emotional understanding and acceptance of a concept.
Blackwhite– Loyal willingness to say black is white when party discipline demands this. It also means the ability to believe that black is white, and more, to know black is white, and forget that one has ever believed the contrary.
Crimestop – The ability of instinctually stopping thoughts that are deemed criminal by Big Brother.
Chocorat – Chocolate ration of 25g per person and eligible to change at any given moment.
Crimethink – Any thought that contradicts the principles of Ingsoc.
Doubleplus– – A prefix used to create the superlative form of an adjective or adverb. (i.e. – pluscold and doublepluscold meant, respectively, ‘very cold’ and ‘superlatively cold’.
If you want a stronger version of “good”, what sense is there in having a whole string of vague useless words like “excellent” and “splendid” and all the rest of them? “Plusgood” covers the meaning, or “doubleplusgood” if you want something stronger still.
Doublethink – To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them.
Duckspeak – Unconscious speaking which is reminiscent of a duck quacking.
Eastasia – One of the three superstates, comprising of China and immediate southern countries. Eastasia was an ally of Oceania at the start of Nineteen Eighty-Four. By the end of the novel Eastasia was, and always had been, Oceania’s enemy.
Eurasia – One of the three superstates. Comprising of the whole northern part of the European Eurasia was Oceania’s enemy at the beginning of Nineteen Eighty-Four. By the end of the novel Eurasia had always been Oceania’s ally.
Facecrime – The punishable offence of a facial expression, such as a nervous tic or brief look of anxiety, that would indicate via a Telescreen that a person was experiencing thoughts that were not in line with Ingsoc principles.
Goldstein, Emmanuel – The supreme enemy of the state who revolted and betrayed the Inner Party.
Goldstein’s Book – A book detailing the totalitarian governance of the state and which is categorically forbidden to be obtained or read by anyone outside of the inner party.
Goodthinker – A person adheres to all of the principles of Newspeak.
Hate week – A week of celebratory events, such as rallies and social gatherings that promote hatred.
Ingsoc – English socialism.
Inner Party – The bourgeois of Oceania, approximately 2% of the population.
Joycamp – Forced labour camp.
Malreported – Media reports (specifically The Times newspaper) that are considered to be untrue by Big Brother and therefore reported as false.
Memory hole – A vacuum system used to destroy media coverage and documentation , thereby allowing the rewriting of history.
Miniluv – Ministry of Love, responsibility- law and order.
Minipax – Ministry of Peace, responsibility- war.
Miniplenty – Ministry of Plenty, responsibility- rationing.
Minitrue – Ministry of Truth, responsibility- propaganda.
Newspeak – The official language of Oceania.
Oceania – One of the three superstates comprising of North and South America, Britain, Australia, and southern Africa.
Oldspeak – Standard English.
Oldthink – Outdated mode of thought not consistent with Ingsoc principles.
Outer Party – Oceania’s middle class citizens, approximately 13% of population.
Ownlife – Individualism and personal aspirations.
Physical Jerks – Morning exercises that are compulsory for all party members.
Prole – proletarians or the working class. Approximately 85% of the population.
Prolefeed – Propaganda delivered as media entertainment.
Recdep – Records Department and employer of Winston Smith.
Speakwrite – Voice recognition device.
Telescreen – Televisions that are compulsory in the homes, private and public spaces of all party members that act as surveillance devices.
ThoughtPolice – Police force in charge of eliminating crimethink.
Two Minutes Hate – Daily broadcasts of grotesque images used to incite hatred and anger.
Unperson – Person that has been erased from existence by the government.
Vaporized – The process by which an individual is erased from existence.
Versificator – A device from producing the arts that conform to Ingsoc principles.
Youth League – Compulsory school that teaches children to recognise and expose Thoughtcrime in parents.
